Should be called Ethernet Explained,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
Cleared up alot of questions I had regarding layer two technologies. 10mb, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet are explained in detail. Some books I have read skipped some of the material presented in this book. Just my luck it was the very material that was asked on my CCIE written examination. Where was this book two years ago? You guys have it made, all you have to do is know where to look. Back then there was no place to look, except Cisco.I also recommend, "Routing TCP/IP" isbn: 1-57870-041-8, author: Jeff Doyle

Good preparation for CCIE written 350-001,

Check the CCIE written blueprint for confirmation. But this book is good preparation for the ethernet sections of the exam. Cleared up alot of questions I had regarding understanding packets. Could also be used as a reference when preparing for the CLSC 1.0 examination. This book sits on my desk next to my TCP/IP books from Comer and Stevens, which are used by all the CCIE's in my office. It's noticeable when an author has experience with the topic of the book, opposed to an editor who is unfamiliar with the subject matter. Saves you alot of time of packing the book back up and shipping it back to Amazon!

I never truly understood all the implementations of 802.X until reading this book. Everything I didn't know is here. MAC, Flow control, 10BaseT, FDDI compared to Gigabit Ethernet vs ATM. This is the kind of book I have been looking for. Guarantee you will understand Layer two technologies 70% better than you did previously. Give this book TWO THUMBS UP!!

Highly recommend book for CCIE written exam,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
Covers alot of the material I didn't know 100% during the exam. After reading the book and comparing my current knowledge to when I took the beta, I am 100% on ethernet technologies. *I also recommend purchasing Cisco Certification "Bridges, Routers & Switches" Author: Bruce Caslow. For a understanding of bridging and switching. Consider layer two mastered, move on to layers three and four.

Learn how to tune a network for optimum performance. Distinguish if the problem is at the datalink layer or the network layer. Highly recommend this book, two thumbs up!!!

Excellent training on 802.x technologies,

This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
If you purchase one book on ethernet technologies this is it. Some of my co-workers are CCIE's and thought this is a great book. Lays the foundation to build upon when you get into Catalyst 5500 and 8500 where both layer 2 and 3 are combined. When troubleshooting you know where to begin. Would also recommend "Internetworking with TCP" Volumne I by Douglas E. Comer. Both are great foundation books, meaning they don't dive into any Cisco, Bay, 3com IOS issues. Only the methods of how the protocols operate.

This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
This book covers all flavors of ethernet technologies 10/100 1000. Packet level detail explanations of how data is traversed across the datalink layer of the OSI model. If your not familiar with terms such as these or preamble, 802.2, LLC2, 802.3 and 802.5 YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
I found the book to be a comprehensive, authoritative resource while preparing my technical tutorial 'Gigabit Ethernet and Next Generation LANs', delivered at the Next Generation Networks Symposium in Washington, DC on 11/2/98.

Finally...IEEE 802.3 documentaion explained!,

This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
I needed a reference that would help explain the numerous ethernet specifications and this book did the job. The book covers the development of ethernet from standard ethernet (10Mb/s) and fast ethernet (100Mb/s) through the latest gigabit ethernet (1000Mb/s) implementations. The book strength is in how the authors explain the evolution of ethernet with detailed references made to current industry specifications.

Excellent Resource for Learning about Ethernet Systems,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent resource for any person that desires to learn about Ethernet systems. It provides a methodical description of Ethernet technology, starting with an easy-to-understand description of the MAC and Physical Layer in 10 Megabit per second (MB/s) systems. The descriptions of second generation (100 MB/s) and third generation (1000 MB/s) Ethernet technology are both clear and comprehensive, giving the reader a full understanding of the technology and an appreciation of design issues encountered during implementation.
