Amazon.com Review
A highly ambitious undertaking,
Data Communications Gigabit Ethernet Handbook does a good job of escorting you from the theoretical to the practical and back again. Masterminded by
Data Communications Executive Editor Stephen Saunders, this seven-part book covers everything from the historical context of Gigabit Ethernet to tutorials on implementing the technology on your own network. Particularly impressive are the sections on Gigabit Ethernet and related specs, Gigabit Ethernet design tutorials, and available Gigabit Ethernet hardware. Though these sections won't answer all the questions you may have, they will get you thinking.
Saunders assembles an impressive collection of Gigabit pioneers and networking heavyweights to author the book's various chapters. Though there is some information overlap toward the end of the book, the writing and content quality is consistently high. For example, Allen Beasley's chapter on IP switching offers a brilliant dissection of the high-speed networking market that explores economic as well as technical issues.
Many of the chapters point out what is lacking in Gigabit Ethernet and then expound on the technology that can fix the problem. The only caveat is that these solutions have either been developed by the authors or the companies that they are affiliated with. Though this undoubtedly brings the authors' objectivity into question, the chapters do offer clear insights, and terrific technologies do emerge. All of the authors appear to share a common goal--advancing Gigabit Ethernet in the marketplace. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

UNLEASH THE POWER OF GIGABIT ETHERNET. Data Communications Gigabit Ethernet Handbook. Gigabit Ethernet sounds like the answer to a network manager's prayers: a technology that's fast enough to handle any app - from file transfers to delay-sensitive voice and video - on workgroups, departmental LANs, and the corporate backbone. And the price tag can't be beat: ten times the performance of fast Ethernet at two to three times the cost. But companies that want to deploy gigabit Ethernet will have to master an entirely new set of topology and design rules. And they'll also have to find solutions to some pressing problems, including how to prevent congestion from overwhelming the network; how to implement routing; and how to enforce quality of service and prioritization. This comprehensive handbook delivers the answers to all your gigabit Ethernet questions\=direct from the leading industry experts on this high-speed technology. And it's edited by Stephen Saunders, the world's premier networking technology publication. Here are just some of the technical issues discussed in detail: How to design a gigabit Ethernet LAN for optimal performance; How to add gigabit Ethernet to your corporate Backbone with minimal disruption; How to tune attached servers and end-stations to make the most of gigabit throughput; How gigabit Ethernet compares with other LAN technologies; How to choose the best gigabit Ethernet products\=and avoid the lemons! Let this handbook show you how to harness the power of gigabit Ethernet\=and avoid the pitfalls. Net managers, network architects, and consultants can all benefit from this straightforward assessment of today's hottest LAN technology.
