One of the few communications arenas with growing profits, Gigabit Ethernet is carving itself a serious niche in MANs and WANs. No surprise when you look at GigE’s benefits—low cost, easily managed and scalable bandwidth, making it the perfect pipe for ASPs (Application Service Providers) video transport, storage area networks (SANs), and other high-demand data loads.
MAN at Work (GigE-POWERED)
Gigabit Ethernet is the protocol powering more and more MANs and WANs. If you’re on the frontlines of this deployment or want to be, there’s no better source of insight than this guide from top GigE-in-MANs specialist Paul Bedell. Packed with details and guidance you won’t find elsewhere, Gigabit Ethernet for Metro Area Networks rolls out well-organized information on the technology, the standards, the applications, and the market players. It's all wrapped up with a look at some case studies that prove the value of GigE in today's MAN.
A TRACEABLE MAP TO HELP YOU—
* Learn the importance of the new 10 GigE IEEE 802.3ae standard
* Line up GigE against SONET, ATM, Frame Relay, and legacy dedicated transport modes (DS-n) in metro networks
* Size up manufacturers, products, and service providers, including nontraditional players
* Understand the roles of CLECs (Competitive Local Exchange Carriers) and ELECs (Enterprise Local Exchange Carriers)
* Integrate complementary technologies such as DWDM, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), and next-generation SONET
* Build new features with Ethernet in the MAN, WAN, and LAN
* Get on top of technological trends, next-generation design approaches, and business models for MANs and WANs
* Solve real-world deployment and compatability issues
He began his telecommunications career in the United States Army Signal Corps, serving in (West) Germany from 1985 to 1988, where he worked as a multichannel communications equipment operator at a remote signal site. Upon discharge in 1988, Bedell spent five years working for several Fortune 500 companies as a telecommunciations analyst.
From there, he moved to the wireless industry, where he spent five years working for three leading wireless carriers in both the celluarl and PCS industries. He spent two-and-a-half years as a network engineer for United States Cellular. During that time, he designed and implemented fixed and interconnection networks in most regions of the United States. He then moved to PrimeCo Personal Communications, where he managed the build out of the prelaunch fixed network for the metro portion of PrimeCo's Chicago market. Bedell then moved to Aerial Communications (which is now known as T-Mobile), where he designed and managed the build out of Aerial's prelaunch wide area network (WAN).
Bedell moved to Ameritech's long-distance business unit in 1998, Ameritech Communications, Inc. (ACI), where he managed the implementation of ACI's 42-node data network, which supported its new 2,500-mile SONET system that spanned the five Ameritech states. Paul also installed two voice over IP (VoIP) networks at ACI before moving into Data Network Product Marketing in August 2000.
Since August 2000, he has been the Associate Director of Product Marketing at SBC Communications, managing a metro area Ethernet product known as GigaMAN(sm). Bedell managed the expansion of the product into the Pacific Bell and Southwestern Bell territories. GigaMAN was originally introduced by SBC in the Ameritech region in 1999.

IT Professional's Must-Have Manual,
This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet for Metro Area Networks (Paperback)
As an IT manager for a large corporation, and an engineer, I did not think I needed a book on Gigabit Ethernet. However, I was given this book recently and have found myself going to it on a regular basis. This book is not a simple study of GigE. It is a comprehensive guide to data networking that includes storage, fiber channel, SAN, WAN, LAN and more. I would recommend any person in IT or data networking to have this book on their shelf.

There's much more to technology than where the bits go. Equally important is the role of the technology in the marketplace, the applications that the technology enables, the economics that underlie its success or failure, and the companies that play in the space. Bedell's book does all of these. Far more than just a "how does it work" guide, "Gigabit Ethernet" provides information that will help corporate decision-makers chart a course of action for Gigabit Ethernet implementation in thir own firms. If you are a middle or senior level manager with GbE on your plate, you need to read this book.

A very well written book...,
By Robert (Manassas, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gigabit Ethernet for Metro Area Networks (Paperback)
A sign of a good writer is when somebody technical can teach individuals at all levels of understanding (e.g. Jeff Doyle: Routing TCP/IP Volume 1). That is just what this author did. He gives a comprehensive view of Gigabit Ethernet and draws relevant comparisons to competing technologies. Not only does he show its current applications, but also explores the pricing and implementation considerations of GigE which are VERY important factor in today's competitive market. I also found it interesting how the author gave an "inside" explanation at how the major service providers are competing for the marketshare. If you are still trying to decide on this book, I think the sales rank tells the story. This book is second in total sales (690,882) compared to all other books on the same topic. Also, some technical books have egregious errors in them which shows poor editing and a "rush" mentality (e.g. Sybex). This author obviously put careful thought into his presentation and organization. I generally do not like books published by McGraw-Hill, but I will strongly consider buying more of their technical books after reading this one. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. I highly recommend.
