So to get Gigabit speeds from the R6300, I have to buy two of them?

No it has 4 wired gigabit ports and also the dual bands are fast and close to gigabit but you will need a AC adapter to reach the over 1300 mbps speed on wifi only

Not at all. If you have 2 units you can bridge them to increase your reception range if you have a large house or a 2 story house. One is adequate for large houses. I have my on one side of the house and a computer set up in the garage on the opposite side with a WNDA4100 adapter and have no reception problems what so ever.
