I have this setup running as a windows7 home theater PC with xbmc and playon server attached to a synology nas for storage. I have 128gb ssd and 8gb ram (probably overkill for an htpc but I like to over engineer). Works flawlessly and the HDMI out has enough power to push a full 1080p video signal over a 50' run of HDMI cable (I have all media components in a closet). Another PC box that I tried could not push the signal. Unit runs almost completely silent. The unit comes with a mounting bracket for the back of a TV which would work very well if that is what you are interested in.

I have not noticed any of the defects observed by the other reviewer. The quality of my unit is great and feels very solid. This replaced a custom built PC I had that was noisy due to fans needed to cool power supply. Now I have a quiet and cool running PC with a very small footprint in their media closet.

I used this for my HTPC with the following software:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Windows Media Center with HDHomeRun software
XBMC

It handles everything with ease. Boot time with the mSATA SSD is about 6-7 seconds. There is absolutely zero hesitation with bouncing around apps, and 1080p video plays without a hint of stutter. My last computer was an Atom-based Acer Revo R3700 and even the video played smoothly, the CPU always hovered around 85-95%, so when the WMC DVR kicked in, it too used CPU, and the video would start to stutter sometimes.

On the Brix, I love that all the outputs are of normal size and are useful. I initially bought an Intel NUC but decided to send it back because it didn't have a digital optical output and my video and audio respectively go to separate destinations... splitting those became a chore and more money.

The Brix is just awesome.

I was deciding between a Mac Mini and a Brix. Honestly, had the Mac Mini been updated to Haswell, I think I would have ended up with the Mac. I was looking for a small and capable machine, and decided to go with the Brix.

My setup was a Windows 8.1, 240GB Crucial mSATA M500, 16GB RAM and Intel wifi. I have also plugged in a SanDisk Cruzer 64GB and use it as my workspace and my download folder.

Happy Points:

1. This Brix is really fast. I don't play games, nor do I edit movies or use software like Photoshop so I can't tell its performance in this area. Even when I run Ubuntu on Virtual Box, the Brix performs completely seamlessly. It performs even better than my quad core i7 desktop machine. The difference, in my opinion, is the SSD vs the hard disk that my quad core runs on. In any case, for what I need to do, I am much more than satisfied. My Windows 8.1 boot up in less than 5 seconds - I can't ask for anything more than that.

2. I have tried both the VGA output (through mini display port), as well as HDMI. The HDMI is very sharp and crisp. Completely satisfied. The VGA output works fine too, but the HDMI quality is naturally better.

3. The system stays around 50 degrees celsius. A bit warm to the feel, but I have no worries about hardware being cooked.

4. Installation of the hardware and Windows 8.1 was extremely easy and painless.

5. The Brix comes with USB 3.0.

6. Stable. After using it for a few weeks, I have absolutely no problems with the hardware - no hanging, no slow down, no blue screen. Everything so far so good.

Neutral points:
1. Due to all the comments that I have read, I went straight for Intel wifi instead of the stock, so I can't tell you the performance of the stock wifi card.

I have been looking for a smaller footprint computer for my home use. I spent a few months reading reviews and checking out this unit before I bought one. I am so glad I selected this model. I filled it with a Crucial M500 120GB mSATA, Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s SODIMM and Window 7.

Very easy to install the mSATA and SODIMM. Plugged my USB DVD in and booted up and installed Window 7 with no problems. After window 7 install you will have to install the drivers on the provided CD. Then everything will take off as advertised.

I have been running this as a home computer on a home network for about a month. Unit runs very cool so far. Fast boot up and screen refresh. Wireless connected right off with no problems. Network connection with the 1gb connection has been rock sold. Connected to my monitor with a HDMI to DVI cable with no problems.

This is not a unit for someone that doesn't know how to build a computer and install OS and drivers. But if you can do that this is the unit for you.

Saving now for my second unit.

I got this as a replacement for a roughly two year old laptop I was using as a desktop with two monitors. I still wanted a "desktop" computer setup, but wanted it to be sleek and minimal so another laptop was out, and of course I didn't want a typical tower, so this was perfect. The total cost ultimately probably ended up being more than other options I could've chosen once I bought the hard drive and RAM. I also ended up buying another Windows license and I upgraded the included wifi/BT to a card with ac.

I went with Amazon's suggested SSD (Crucial M500 120GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT120M500SSD3) and RAM (Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules CT2KIT51264BF160B). The new wifi/BT card I got was the Intel Network 7260.HMWG WiFi Wireless-AC 7260 H/T Dual Band 2x2 AC+Bluetooth HMC.
