The Celeron 1037U used on THIS motherboard is pretty much IDENTICAL in performance to the Celeron B830 that I have been so happy with in my laptop for the last year, except that it has even LOWER power requirements at only 17W!
This motherboard has a significantly more powerful CPU than some of the other low power mini ITX motherboards using Intel Atoms or AMD E-350. One of my reasons for choosing this motherboard is because I like VLC player for video playback under Linux. VLC is simple, works GREAT, and plays pretty much EVERYTHING, but unfortunately, VLC under Linux still doesn't yet fully take advantage of GPU acceleration to offload video decoding from the CPU, so it needs to rely more on raw CPU processing power to insure smooth video playback. Some of the other low power motherboard options like the Intel Atoms, and AMD E-350, will work fine if you only run them with GPU accelerated drivers under Windows - but they just don't have the CPU power needed for smooth 1080HD playback with VLC under Linux. The Celeron 1037U CPU on this motherboard has two to three times the raw CPU horsepower of some other low power mini ITX CPUs, which allows seamlessly smooth 1080HD playback with VLC.
I have my SiliconDust HDhomerun Dual tuner connected to one of the two Gig-E LAN ports on this motherboard, which let's me view or record up to two off-the-air television channels at the same time.Read more ›
Overall I'm very satisfied with the board and would say it's a good value for the money.
I'd recommend this board to anyone. (And have)
Running 8GB DDR3 1600 HyperX, 1 - Sata/ 1 - IDE drive (was surprised to find a mobo that could still service these ol' drives, just play in BIOS if you are going to use IDE with windows) all on windows 7 64 bit (some Intel drivers were hard to find, but all worked out in the end) for the last two months!
I hope to get Windows 8 soon and try this setup out there, until then I can't speak for that setup - but it is rated for Windows 8...so I'm hopeful!
Current use: Web Browser, some Netflix and been able to play Age of Empires II: Reloaded and Minecraft with 35-45% max CPU...not bad for a little ITX!!!
Side note: I've built with MSI, ASUS and Intel boards in the past - so this was the first time I have tried a Gigabyte, and I am very happy with it! Pretty much Plug and Play!
