GIGABYTE Z68 series motherboards are equipped with the much anticipated IntelR Smart Response Technology, allowing users to experience system performance similar to SSD only systems. IntelR Smart Response technology works by using intelligent block-based caching of frequently used applications to improve system performance and responsiveness.

GIGABYTE Z68 motherboards are equipped with the much anticipated IntelR Smart Response Technology, allowing users to experience system performance similar to SSD-only systems. IntelR Smart Response technology works by using intelligent block-based caching of frequently used applications to improve system performance and responsiveness. In fact, GIGABYTE Z68 motherboards with IntelR Smart Response Technology are able to outperform hybrid drive systems by more than 2X (PC Mark Vantage HDD test) and HDD-only systems by as much as 4X (PC Mark Vantage HDD test) and deliver a 60% performance improvement over HDD-only systems in PC Mark Vantage Suite.

GIGABYTE EZ Smart Response
ASINB0054OWTQU_photo_EZ.jpg

The GIGABYTE EZ Smart Response utility is a simple application that allows users to quickly and easily configure their system for Intel® Smart Response Technology. In the past, enabling Intel® Smart Response meant users needed to enter the BIOS in order to configure their system for RAID mode, which then required a complete reinstall of the operating system. Once that processes was complete, users then needed to install the Intel® Rapid Storage Utility as well as configure Intel's Smart Response Technology. GIGABYTE EZ Smart Response does all of this automatically, without users having to perform a complicated install process. This allows them to quickly and effortlessly enjoy a significant boost in system performance.

GIGABYTE Touch BIOSTM (Patent Pending)
ASINB0054OWTQU_photo_1.jpg

An Innovative New Way to Modify BIOS Settings

Navigating through the BIOS to change system settings can be a daunting task for users not familiar with control "F" functions and mouse-less navigation. While some EFI BIOS try to address this with a mouse friendly environment, many implementations still lack a certain ease-of-use necessary for most people. With GIGABYTE Touch BIOSTM, GIGABYTE engineers have completely re-imagined how users can interact with their BIOS, allowing for a more intuitive user experience. In fact, with a touch screen monitor, GIGABYTE Touch BIOSTM is as easy to use as most apps on your iPhone.

Lights come on and go back off, it's not a boot loop issue, it just won't post at all, lights go out and all the fans and power stays on.

Pros: This board is like the more expensive Z68XP-UD4, but it has an extra PCI-e x1, and an onboard mSATA connector. It includes FireWire ports, unlike most of the other boards in this price range. It has an HDMI out for the Intel HD graphics so you can use Intel's Quick Sync technology for video converting, and it includes Lucid's Virtu software so that it's still usable with a discreet video card. I've tried 2 converters (Cyberlink MediaEspresso 6, ArcSoft MediaConvertor 7) and they both see Quick Sync with a discreet card installed.

Cons: The mSATA port is SATA II, and disables one of the SATA II ports when in use, but you still have plenty. I'm not using it yet, but I'll likely use it later for Intel's Smart Response or a similar SSD caching technology when it becomes available.

Though it has an HDMI output onboard, it's designed for use with a discreet video card, as it has no DVI or VGA ports. I think it's a smart tradeoff, giving the best of both worlds.

It can be kind of difficult determining the differences between Gigabyte models.

I was aiming to try out Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) but also didn't want to spend a fortune on it. Got this, dropped a i7 2600k, a Crucial M4, GTX 570, and 16 gigs of RAM into it.

First startup was a bit scary. The fans came on but nothing else happened. I'm still not sure exactly what was wrong, but I pulled out and reseated the RAM, moved the GPU to the bottom slot, and reconnected the HDs. Then it just worked. Haven't had any problems since.

One note- like a lot of new motherboards, this one does not have any IDE connectors, so only SATA drives will work. It has 8 connectors on two separate controllers, plus a mSATA for SRT. But hooking up a drive to this will drop one of the others out, so it doesn't really help. Standard is both SATA I and II, though from experience it doesn't really matter speed-wise.

The board supports USB 3.0 and has built in 7.1 audio that IMO is at least as good as any dedicated card (and without all the driver issues). Gigabyte EZ-Smart Response is also pretty cool if you don't want to reformat.

Pros:
USB 3.0, SATA 2, SRT enabled
Tons of SATA ports, SLI/Crossfire support
EZ-Smart Response tool

Cons:
mSATA is kind of useless since it eats up a SATA port when in use
No IDE if you still use it

Mobo came fast as amazon always does. Fast nice sweet package.

Worked out of the box everything installed nicely except I had a problem with intel's onboard graphics.

Originally i had purchased the board for the hdmi output on the board and the virtu technology included to help with graphics switching.

However after installing windows 7 and stuff, the intel graphic in device manager shows not enough resource to run. Which sucked!!! otherwise board is great.

I have some fairly mixed opinions about this board, but overall, it stands out above the rest. I'll start with the pros:

PROS:
-Z68 board ready for second-generation i5 and i7 Intel CPUs.
-6Gb/s SATA Ports
-USB 3.0 Port
-2 PCIe 16x Slots (Note: See cons)
-mSATA for Smart Response (Note: See cons)
-Great value for the price

CONS:
-First board was defective out of box. Had to get Amazon to give me a new one.
-When using both PCIe 16x slots (for Cross-fire or SLI), it drops to 8x (pretty standard, though).
-SATA port 5 is disabled if you use the mSATA port for Smart Response.
-Advertizes EFI "Touch" BIOS, but it's still the same old keyboard-only blue schemed BIOS.
-The CPU socket is too close to RAM Slots, so big aftermarket Heat Sinks/Fans will prevent you from using high profile ram in the first slot. This is easily my biggest complaint.

All in all, the pros far outweigh the cons. The biggest thing I want to stress is if you want to use an aftermarket heat sink and fan, make sure it is smaller profile than the 120mm Cooler Master I bought as it will keep you from using one of your RAM slots if you want decent RAM.

My Custom Rig:
CPU: i5-2500k OC @ 4.5GHz
Heat Sink: Cooler Master Heat Piped 120mm Fan
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3
RAM: 4x4GB (16GB) 1600DDR3
PSU: 750w Zephyr
GPU: nVidia GTX560

Tom, you really over reacted. Amazon is only posting the manufacturer's specs. It lists 3 PCI slots total. Made up of 2 PCI slots and one new style PCI-Ex1.

This review is more about the seller than the product. I have two other GA-Z68XP-UD3's that work perfectly. I don't know what shape this one was in as they shipped me a Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 in the GA-Z68XP-UD3 box with all of the accessories for a GA-Z68XP-UD3. Since the GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 is a lower end motherboard with fewer features I wasn't going to keep that. I was fortunate that I was able to return it and I didn't have to pay for return shipping, but I'm not pleased with how everything turned out. It set a build back by a couple of weeks and disappointed a new owner as Amazon didn't have any others in stock. I was able to find a new one from another online store and the build was completed, although late.

The GA-Z68XP-UD3 itself is one of the better Z68 boards for overclocking and supports SLI and Crossfire. I've had one up and running flawlessly for a year and a half and went with another one for the next build since I knew what I would be getting, or at least I thought I did.

Amazon's service was quite good in how they handled things and my money was refunded about a week later.
