like many others, have been waiting months for the right time to get radeon r9 290. Price hikes, poor card availability, excessive thermals have made me hold on until i found the right deal and card. I've had multiple gigabyte products in the past that i've been pleased with, the three cooling fan solution looked great for thermals compared to reference design. Ordering directly through amazon minimized the price gauging compred to other retailers, the 499 is probably slightly higher than retail but certainly better than 650 that many are asking. I was concerned about the possible wait time after ordering (since it appeared back ordered) but to my surprise, the card was shipped within a week.

I did read some horror stories on other sites regarding thermals and throttling which made me question my purchase initially, which was quickly alleviated after receiving item. The card I will say i quite attractive and also quite large (make sure you measure and card will fit). Installed quickly with no hiccups, booted up to windows and installed CCC 14.1 beta, again no issues. Installed MSI afterburner and set up custom fan profiles and this thing has stayed cooool and fans are very very quiet. After setting up custom fan profile this thing idles upper 30s to lower 40s and hasnt gone over 75 degrees yet while gaming. I'm sure i could tweak the fan profile to keep temps lower, although honestly dont see the need. I did briefly OC to 1100mhz and had no issues there, although I've since moved it back down to the 1040 because honestly theres no real need to overclock this thing any more. Really lets me push my QHD monitor (qnix QX2710) to its full ability

Anyway, wouldnt hesitate to buy another one of these to run in crossfire if the need every arose, although at this point I'm already maxing out most everything and running it beautifully

I ordered this video card back on Feb. 6 when it was $499 and received it yesterday (march 14). So far so good, no issues installing it into my pc. After the installation I fired up my computer and downloaded the 14.2 beta drivers from AMD and everything is running smoothly. Idle temp is around 40c-42c. I have yet to see the temp on full load but I'm not really too worried about it since these cards are designed to run at 95c. As far as overclocking, I don't think there's a need for it but I know there are people out there that want to squeeze out every bit of performance from these cards, so maybe in the future I'll do that but for now it's running fine.
There is a minor nuisance and that is sometimes i'll hear a "ticking?" sound from the card. I believe it may be one of the fans, but i just fiddle around with the fan speed and the sound goes away. Speaking of fans, as far as noise levels goes it's not bad from 50% and below. Above that is when you'll start to notice it. My case is an NZXT Phantom full tower by the way and it's on my desk a couple feet away from my face.

The only complaint I have is the price... Thank the miners for jacking up the price. The whole price/performance for these high end cards went out the window, but I wanted to support the red team.

If anyone have questions I will do my best to answer.

When I first received the card I was a bit worried, as it was missing a screw that connects back plate to the card. I was able to find a new one and pop it in without issue, but for a $400 card I think there would be a bit more quality control for physical blemishes and missing parts.

The card operates spectacularly in games at 1440p, and I am able to run most at high to extreme settings and still get around 60FPS. You can always look up benchmarks for the card at the resolutions which you play at, so I won't go much into further detail regarding game performance, but just know that my experiences with it in terms are gaming are quite positive.

A common complaint that I read about this particular card was noise, but it's actually rather quiet for an upper end card. My previous GPU is was a XFX 6990, and the fan on it was screaming loud at top speed, but this card is nowhere near that noisy at full load. With general operation (2d applications, simple games, etc) I have been entirely unable to even hear the card, and it's only at close to full load does it begin to become audible. I've glanced at the temps for the card, and it seldom gets over 75c during gaming.

One major issue that I have had with the card however is frequent bluescreen crashes while playing flash video (youtube in particular). I have contacted both Gigabyte and AMD about the issue, and it appears to be a common problem with the 290 line of cards, with it being a driver issue that many are encountering. I have tried a few different versions of their software, but the issue persists to this day. I am hopeful that the issue is cleared up soon, as I really enjoy the card otherwise.
