Coming off a pair of Gigabyte Windforce GTX670's in SLI I had some good faith in Gigabyte and looked to upgrade as I am running 5760x1080 on 3 monitors with NVIDIA surround with an accessory 4th monitor. Reducing the complexity, noise, and inherent problems of SLI was one of the drivers for upgrading this card along with the forthcoming support for the DK2 to decrease latency.

The card does not disappoint, it is a large card, but not huge, pretty much the same same size as my old 670's (a hair wider and longer). I have a full size case so this does not matter. The amount of memory is great, I went from having 2GB (Since SLI only uses one card's memory) to having 4GB, latency, tearing, and stuttering are all gone. Card speed is amazing, I have tried to tax it but nothing I play (E:D and sim racing titles) do not really push it. I wanted a card that could last for a couple years and it should as it is as good or better than a 780TI which is a couple hundred more expensive.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to purchase the Gigabyte over a stock 980 was the outputs, 6!!! So while it can only use four of those, it switches automatically for those that are plugged in. Since I have surround with the DK2 this enables me to be flexible for what type of connector I want to use instead of having to get a bunch of adapters or upgrade my monitors to support my card.

Great card, quiet, cool, powerful, great bang for the buck. The 970 is cheaper, but if you want raw power I think the 980 is worth it (I only buy a graphics card every couple years). If I need to in the future I might look at upgrading to a SLI with the 980 but I have yet to find a reason for that yet. Also as you tax a video card it will automatically scale back to cool off, the windforce with its 600W of cooling ability ensures that no matter what I throw at this card, it will be one cool fast beasty!

Initially, I wasn't sure I was going to upgrade to the GTX 980 when the rumor mill was placing its performance between the 780 and 780 Ti, which seemed pretty disappointing for a flagship card releasing 1.5 years after the last-gen GTX 780. However, when official benchmarks came out and showed that the 980 not only beat out its predecessor in terms of performance, but also the faster GTX 780 Ti as well, I bit the bullet and got myself two GTX 980 G1's for an SLI setup (I didn't get them from Amazon because they were out of stock at the time). After a week and a half of breaking them in, I am thoroughly impressed with these new cards.

Installing the card is fairly straightforward, though there are some things to keep in mind. Firstly, this card is a long one; it measures about 29 cm from the slot panel to the very end. Make sure your case is big enough before buying. Secondly, this version of the card requires 2 EIGHT-pin PCI-e power connectors instead of 2 six-pin connectors. The G1 edition also comes equipped with every display output option you could ever need (including HDMI 2.0 and three DisplayPort 1.2 outputs) for a total of six outputs, of which four can be active simultaneously. Hooking up monitors should be as easy as plug-and-play; the card detects which outputs are in use and automatically turns them on. Finally, the card comes with a Windforce logo on the side that lights up in blue when powered on, which looks rather nice for those with windowed cases who like to show off their hardware.

The 980 G1 comes out of the box with a 100 MHz factory overclock, which is substantial in and of itself. However, if you like to squeeze every last juice out of your cards like I do, the G1 can go much further.

The GTX 980 (and 970) cards come standard with 3 DisplayPort outputs, 1 HDMI, and 1 DVI. The card has a second (extra) DVI output, but using it will disable 2 of the DisplayPort outputs, effectively providing the same old configuration found on previous high end cards.

I use three very high resolution monitors on the DisplayPort outputs:

2560x1440@144hz (Asus ROG Swift)
3840x2160@60hz
2560x1440@60hz

My old card (a GTX 680 2GB) was able to feed all of these under a different output configuration, but the 4k monitor couldn't reach 60hz with the older card due to having to use HDMI for it. Further, 2GB of graphics memory resulted in problems with all those monitors enabled. I couldn't use Aero (transparent window borders) in Windows 7 with all monitors enabled. I couldn't use G-SYNC on my ROG Swift unless I disabled the other monitors before launching a game. With the new 980, all these problems are gone. I get to run the 4k monitor at 60hz and I can play games with G-SYNC without disabling any monitors. I can even use Aero mode again, though there is still a bit of input lag on the 4k monitor caused by this so I keep it turned off most of the time.

The performance of this card is great. I'm not going to spout off benchmark scores here; that is what professional reviews are for. But I will say it is capable of delivering nearly twice the frame rate in some games, compared to my old GTX 680. It does this while drawing less power, and thanks to the Windforce design, it does not produce much noise.

The card is long -- about a full inch longer than my GTX 680 which is also a Windforce design. If you don't have plenty of room in your case, be sure to measure first or you might be in for some unexpected case modification.
