Monster Splitter - Abracadabra! It Worked!,
By
This review is from: Two Gigahertz Low-Loss RF Splitters for TV & Satellite MKII - 2 Way 2 GigaHertz RF Splitter (Electronics)
I am normally a bit cynical about the performance claims of companies like Monster Cable. I'm an engineer, I want to understand exactly what is happening and the slightly fuzzy, "oogy-boogy" nature of some of these claims makes me scoff.
BUT...I am amazed at what this little thing did for me! I spent a good 5 hours on phone calls with my FiOS service provider trying to figure out why my super high speed internet connection was intermittently stopping and going super slow and then hitting its speed limit. My family was getting pretty irate. (It's funny how totally dependent we have become on the internet.) I hate electronic problems that are not repeatable. They are nearly unsolvable. The very helpful customer service reps led me through several attempts to fix the problem. After thinking it was fixed a couple times, the problem reappeared. The last rep (logically) concluded that the only component that could be flakey was the wireless router and he sent me a new one. Didn't fix it. I was getting extremely frustrated. I figured there had to be some very slight fault in the cables that wasn't bad enough to cut off the signal, but bad enough to interfere with it. So I swallowed my skepticism and decided to try replacing the standard quality splitter that the FiOS company installed with one of these Monster 2-way splitters, because that was the simplest first step. Well, blow me down! The problem is gone. I have my screaming fast internet back, and everybody is happy! I guess there really is a meaningful quality difference! Monster, I believe!!

I've been having problems with my cable signal, and I tried a few of these splitters to see if that's where the problem was occurring. Replaced the 15 year old, cable TV company supplied splitter with the Monster, and while it certainly seems to be a more robust product, in the end I saw no performance difference.
Indeed, my cable modem (Motorola) has a diagnostic mode where it can display the strength of the incoming signal. I measured it on the old splitter, switched to the Monster - and see exactly zero difference. Still, considering that my local electronics store no-name brand is about $15, I don't feel bad paying a few dollars more for the Monster product. It certainly seems more rugged, and I doubt I'd ever have to replace it again. Bottom line is I'm sure it's doing what it's supposed to, but there's no magic to be had by simply swapping out a splitter.

I purchased this splitter since I was starting to have trouble with my cable modem. I normally do not buy monster products since I think they are over priced but, I do believe that they make a high quality product so I decided this splitter would be good to try. I had a 3 way splitter from the cable company that had been working just fine. However, signal strength seems to have degraded so I tried a 900Mhz 2 way splitter. I was still having problems so I decided to try this splitter. The problem I was having is that the modem would drop out and not resync until I disconnected my cable TV side of the splitter. The cable modem would then resync and I would reconnect the TV side. I may have to do this several times before the modem stayed working.
I chose this splitter since it was rated for 2Ghz so that any attenuation ( lower signal strength) at the high end would be lessened and thus give a stronger signal. After I received the splitter, I waited until the problem occurred again. I used the Monster Splitter and all has worked well. I did try reconnecting the old splitter and the problem immediately re-occurred. I am sure that my problem is related to my cable modem starting to go bad. The real "fix" is to replace the cable modem. I did buy a Docsis 3 replacement modem. However, I have not gotten around to replacing my old modem since I hate dealing with my cable supplier to authenticate the new modem.

Was having a problem with my cable signal recently with modulation (diagonal) lines appearing intermitently in my TV picture. I assumed it was a new two-radio system in the area. Replaced cables, connectors, etc., but by process of elimination, that left only the cable splitter. The cheap, two dollar products the cable company installs are OK, but if you have an expensive, HI-Def TV, you want to enjoy the clearest possible picture. There is a lot of hype concerning the expensive Monster Cable products, but I decided to try this one anyway, and it delivered! This picture from both outputs may be only slightly better than the original splitter, but the isolation of non-TV signals is definitely superior. Please note that cable only uses signals up to 1 Ghz, but this unit will work well with satellite services that require the 2 Ghz bandwith that this unit offers. Sometimes this proves you get what you pay for!

I have a VOIP phone connected to a router on an Internet connection that was split with the Cable TV. The problem was that my phone wasn't working properly--my voice kept cutting out to the person I was talking to.
After determining the problem was with my Internet connection, it was further determined that the phone worked fine when I removed the splitter that I had, took the TV out of the mix, and plugged the Internet connection directly into the jack in the wall. So the problem was either going to be with the splitter or there just wasn't enough bandwidth to deal with a TV, Internet, and VOIP phone. I bought this splitter to see if replacing the splitter would solve the problem. I plugged the sucker in and packet loss is now zero. It's all good. Best $20 I ever spent.

Performs exactly as I was hoping. This splits a coax cable coming out of my wall, to a Tv and to a DOCSIS high speed modem. I was very pleased to see that my speed/quality is the same with the splitter, as it is without. Awesome!

Low Loss:(slightly better picture and throughput on internet than with the one provided by the cable company).
Two GigaHertz: from what I understand, some part of the cable internet signal uses the higher frequency (I'm not an expert and can't verify), so I can't imagine the higher usable frequency range being split can hurt. As stated earlier, speed tests on upload/download bandwidth at various times showed (minor) improvement after hooking up with this one instead of the one provided by the cable company.

Needed to add cable TV from my existing internet only line. Was concerned would degrade speed of internet..nope, can't tell I'm even splitting the line. Good HDTV picture and fast internet.

I ordred two of these. I found an abandoned cheap splitter that actually measured less loss than this one at CATV frequencies. Not worth the extra money if using for CATV frequencies. I did not sweep it so cannot attest for frequencies at 2ghz.
