Book Description

May 1, 2007

This one-of-a-kind volume has something for everyone who fishes, whether he or she fondly remembers fishing with worms as a child or hurls the fanciest flies toward great prey like Atlantic salmon and tarpon. Its selections celebrate fishing for bass, catfish, trout, striped bass, crappie, tarpon, muskie, Atlantic salmon, bonefish, pike, and many other species. If it swims and can be landed with a rod, line, and hook, it's featured here—as are locations all over the world, from the greatest rivers of Montana to Southern lakes to shores of all American coasts to far-off locations around the world.

Anglers will find their favorites here, writers who have made a living writing on the joys of fishing and renowned names of literature who have shared their tales and wisdom: James Henshall, Mark Sosin, Rudyard Kipling, G.E.M. Skues, Roland Pertwee, Henry Van Dyke, Dave Barry, Bill Barich, Ted Leeson, John Maclean, James Prosek, Lefty Kreh, John McPhee, Zane Grey, Joan Wulff, Howell Raines, and so many more. There are also wonderful little-known pieces by virtually unknown authors, and special discoveries—like the famous painter of birds, John James Audubon, writing about cat-fishing in the Ohio River. Fishermen nationwide will love this gigantic compendium—and it will make an ideal gift.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Who better to edit and introduce an enormous collection of fishing writing than one of America's most accomplished editors and publishers of angling books, Nick Lyons. Lyons has turned over every stone to include an incredible array of well-known fishing scribes like Izaak Walton, Thomas McGuane, James Prosek and John McPhee. And with the inclusion of literary heavyweights like Lord Byron, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rudyard Kipling and Washington Irving, the selections run the gamut from nonfiction and fiction to poetry, and cover just about every fish, from the regal trout to the powerful tuna. While all the entries may not fit every angler's fancy, they certainly ensure that there is something for everyone. Despite the varying writing styles, the collection never feels disjointed because, to borrow a phrase from A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean, who's included, in the end all these divergent topics seem to merge into one. That's because they share the virtues of anticipation, mystery and wonder that are inherent not only to great literature but to a sporting endeavor that focuses on knowing what is happening beneath the surface. From Booklist

A critically acclaimed fishing writer and a publisher of fishing books, Lyons is the obvious first choice to edit an anthology of significant writings on the sport. He delivers the goods with this lavishly illustrated, lunker-sized omnibus, which weighs in at an impressive 3.5 pounds. Lyons groups his 116 selections around broad categories such as fishing type (warm water, saltwater, or trout), fishing history and philosophy, and classic fishing stories. Some of the authors collected here are known for their work beyond fishing (Thoreau, Dave Barry, and the late David Halberstam, who provides a foreword, for example), although most of the contributors will be unknown to those not well versed in fishing lit. Surprisingly, Lyons does not include such strong, newer writers as Bill Tapply, John Gierach, and Thomas McGuane. Nevertheless, this volume, bringing together fishing literature across several centuries, will add breadth and depth to a library's angling collection and will hook new readers just beginning to explore this special corner of sportswriting. 5.0 out of 5 stars The indispensable fishing anthology, May 13, 2007
This review is from: The Gigantic Book of Fishing Stories (Hardcover)
What a wonderful book! There's a lot of great writing about fishing out there, but I've never come across so much of it gathered in one place. Nick Lyons, who is himself a kind of legend in the fishing world, has assembled a sampling of the best of the classic and contemporary tales, memoirs, essays and poetry.
The Gigantic Book of Fishing Stories is perfect for anyone who fishes, or knows someone who fishes, or loves life out of doors.
I know what I'll be giving as gifts this year.
