4.0 out of 5 stars Trippy jazz, December 24, 2004

This review is from: Gigantic (Audio CD)
The disparate worlds of trippy atmospheric textures and insane slide guitar collide in this collection of grooving jams. Bassist J.A. Granelli wrote all but one of the avant-tinged tunes -- an oddball take on the Bee Gee's "If I Can't Have You" -- but it's slide savant David Tronzo who leads the charge. His control and inventiveness are stunning, and his tones range from silky to screaming -- sometimes within a single phrase. Imagine Jeff Beck's fearless melodicism harnessed to Ry Cooder's deft bottleneck moves, and you're pretty much there.

This review is from: Gigantic (Audio CD)
This is a great collection of tunes (all but one instrumental and original). Son of innovative jazz drummer Jerry Granelli, New York City based bassist J.A. Granelli is a decent composer in his own right, but it seems his real talent is for leading his band to play tight inventive laid-back jazz/rock/funk. The closest sound I can compare it to is the Derek Trucks Band (slide guitarist, David Tronzo, has that Trucks sound, vibe and flexible dexterity, and is delightfully a prominent feature here, but the whole band is equally talented and united sounding). I'm amazed this isn't a more well known band, but then realize there are probably hundreds of artist/bands out there of similar high caliber, but working hard under the radar. Maybe that helps make them great, and willing to take chances... Anyways, this is too good a bargain to pass up.
