Gigantopithecus And Bigfoot Research,
By
This review is from: Giganto: Real King Kong (DVD)
Russell Ciochon of the University Of Iowa and Jack Rink of McMaster University attempt DNA extraction from Gigantopithecus fossil teeth; the attempt is unsuccessful as the youngest teeth in the sample are 300,000 years old, which is significantly greater than the 100,000-year limit for research study. I agree with Ciochon that Gigantopithecus is probably not the identity of Bigfoot because of the massive U-shaped lower jaw that most probably projected outward and the lack of recent fossils; I disagree with Ciochon that known animals are the explanation for Bigfoot sightings as track casts are clearly those of an unknown animal. Anthony Olejniczak of the Max Plank Institute states that Gigantopithecus has the thickest tooth enamel of all primates.
In the Suiattle River wilderness area of the north Cascade Mountains of Washington, Jeff Meldrum, John Mionczynski, Mark Peterson, Richard Noll, and other researchers camouflage hair snags and video cameras and examine the land for plant food sources. Bigfoot sightings are described and dramatized; Mionczynski's encounter experience in the summer of 1972 in the Wind River Mountains was interesting in showing the throwing of pine cones, and in 1890 in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, Theodore Roosevelt heard "a great low, rumbling roar" that he felt did not come from any known animal.

There is very little actual science in this documentary. I checked it out of the library thinking I would learn something about the fossil DNA of an early primate.
Instead, there are lots of interviews and "re-enactments" with people who are lying about Bigfoot sightings. I hope next time the History channel will choose to interview the JUST the scientist. |
