Editorial Reviews

Throughout human history tales of massive creatures abound. Among the most persistent are those of giant ape-like creatures including the Yeti of the Himalayas and North America's elusive "Bigfoot." Despite the lore surrounding these mythological beings many scientists believe that a real-life Gigantopithecus ("giant ape") may have existed millions of years ago. In this fascinating program journey with modern scientists as they travel across the globe looking for evidence that points to the existence of this 10-foot-tall ancient primate. Using forensic testing 3-D animation and historic eyewitness accounts GIGANTO traces the remains of the oversized ape to Asia and attempts to connect fossil DNA to potential modern-day relatives. Could Gigantopithecus have inspired the well-known legend of King Kong and other creatures? Join HISTORY for an exploration of this and many other questions as it uncovers the truth behind this evolutionary mystery.

Russell Ciochon of the University Of Iowa and Jack Rink of McMaster University attempt DNA extraction from Gigantopithecus fossil teeth; the attempt is unsuccessful as the youngest teeth in the sample are 300,000 years old, which is significantly greater than the 100,000-year limit for research study. I agree with Ciochon that Gigantopithecus is probably not the identity of Bigfoot because of the massive U-shaped lower jaw that most probably projected outward and the lack of recent fossils; I disagree with Ciochon that known animals are the explanation for Bigfoot sightings as track casts are clearly those of an unknown animal. Anthony Olejniczak of the Max Plank Institute states that Gigantopithecus has the thickest tooth enamel of all primates.

In the Suiattle River wilderness area of the north Cascade Mountains of Washington, Jeff Meldrum, John Mionczynski, Mark Peterson, Richard Noll, and other researchers camouflage hair snags and video cameras and examine the land for plant food sources. Bigfoot sightings are described and dramatized; Mionczynski's encounter experience in the summer of 1972 in the Wind River Mountains was interesting in showing the throwing of pine cones, and in 1890 in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, Theodore Roosevelt heard "a great low, rumbling roar" that he felt did not come from any known animal.

A great show about Gigantopithecus blacki, a now extinct massive ape of southeast Asia that tipped the scales at 1200lbs and stood 10 feet tall on its hind legs. Fossils are examined as well as relatives.

"Giganto: The Real King Kong" is a slow-paced and somewhat confusing documentary about Bigfoot, written by Doug Hajicek, the producer of "MonsterQuest". It was originally aired at History's sister channel H2. "Giganto" features interviews with eyewitnesses, and an expedition involving Jeff Meldrum of Idaho University trying to find evidence of the elusive creature.

To give the show a more classy feeling, it also features a more mainstream scientist (and Bigfoot sceptic), Russel Ciochon, searching for new fossils of Gigantopithecus, an enormous primate living in East Asia during prehistoric times. The connection between the two subjects may look forced to an outsider, but many Bigfoot enthusiasts speculate that Gigantopithecus might have survived, migrated to North America and still roams the woods in the form of Bigfoot. Yet, I wonder how Ciochon feels about being shown on the same program as Bigfoot true believers?

Personally, I'm somewhat partial to the idea of a North American ape (or is it a ghoul), so I'm going to give "Giganto" three stars, but I can't say it really thrilled me. More interesting documentaries about Bigfoot and other monsters exist. Fans of Hajicek's mega-project "MonsterQuest" might like it, though.

Hard to believe anyone didn't like this. It marries science with the true believers to give a balanced look at Sasquatch. Yes, there is little DNA evidence in it, because very little Sasquatch DNA has ever been uncovered. Most Bigfoot documentaries are poorly produced and just feature some guy talking stating his beliefs. This one (like most History Channel productions) is well-produced, features many experts, and all the best evidence. In fact, the only rivals out there for best Bigfoot documentary are Bigfoot Guide, Ancient Mysteries - Bigfoot (both History Channel productions) and Mysterious Monsters, featuring Peter Graves. Take a look, you will be impressed!

There is very little actual science in this documentary. I checked it out of the library thinking I would learn something about the fossil DNA of an early primate.

Instead, there are lots of interviews and "re-enactments" with people who are lying about Bigfoot sightings.

I hope next time the History channel will choose to interview the JUST the scientist.
