Readers will be pleased with this book if they are interested with the design of the Alien film not so much the theme of the film or Giger's art. The book is set up in pseudo biographical form that records the chain of events that led up to the production of the Alien film, through the eyes of Giger. While it does contain many of Giger's paintings they are not the center of the book rather than a means of describing film design and offering a contrast between Giger's vision and the outcome of the film. C.J.

Giger's Alien is an excellent companion book to a classic film. It is written from Giger's diaries about his experience on the production of the film. It also has many behind the scene photographs. A very entertaining behind the scenes book about a classic film.

This is a great book about H.R. Giger's concept and design of the most grotesque science fiction creature ever created. The only thing more horrific than the ALIEN is the asking price of Amazon sellers. This book was selling in new condition for about $18.00 plus shipping a week or so ago. Now every seller on Amazon in their greedy thirst has increased their prices to ridiculous expectations.

This was my first introduction to the artwork of one of my favorite artists in the world, H.R. Giger (Geeger, not Geiger). This book is a perfect blend of a fascinating look at the creative process of moviemaking and a first rate art book. Most people are familiar with Giger's art through his Oscar winning work on Alien. This book tells it all, from how he was discovered by the filmmakers to the final product and all the twisting alleys in between. If this is all you know about Giger, check out this book to see some truly groundbreaking work in cinema (remember, this was the mid 70s) in sci-fi and horror. There are gorgeous reproductions of Giger's finished art from his production designs as well as showing the creative process of bringing the world's scariest special effect into existence. This is not an exhaustive exploration of the movie Alien. Start with the Alien Vault for that. But this is a great telling of the story of the central character, the Alien. You will learn a lot. Check it out.

Short version: great for fans of the series, but the book could have been higher quality. It's really sort of a shame to see a paper-bound art book. I deducted a star largely because it doesn't seem like the thing will endure.

The book contains a variety of sketches and concept images, as well as journal entries detailing HR Giger's frustrations and fascinations during the creative process of developing Alien's Alien. A variety of insights into how the sets and "characters" were constructed shed light on Giger's role in shaping one of the most unique science fiction worlds, from a visual standpoint, ever created. You can see the sets under construction as piles of bone or plasticine models, as well as the derelict ship which appears to play a prominent role in the upcoming Prometheus.

There are constant allusions to the role producers and creative partners played in limiting the scope of what Giger wanted to accomplish with the character, while also providing humorous insights into the little victories he won along the way. It's insider-y without focusing too heavily on the commercial realities of movie-making in the late 70's, but interesting tidbits like Giger's accommodation in a hotel the Stones had been through is amusing. The focus is always on how Giger visualized and worked on his art, from his perspective.

A must-have if you're a fan of the series; less so if you're merely curious.

Even though I already know a lot of this from DVD and Bluray extras, you know: a book is a book. And as Alien movie is reintroduced to cinemas this winter (2015), this was a "must have" item.

This book is spectacular, it shows all the artwork he created 4 Alien and he tells abou his experiences everyday that he worked on the film. It saddened me to know that most of his work was not realized in the film, but what do you expect from the Hollywood machine. I got tears in my eyes when his longtime love Mia wrote the last paragraph about him winning the oscar (Acadamy Award) for his work. The Alien films would have never worked out if it wasnt for Gigers work in the first film. It really ticked me off to find out that the studio and film crew treated Giger the way they did. They ripped him off on the first film because he didnt even get a fair mention in the credits which sucks because in my eyes it was his film, not Ridley Scotts. Maybe someday someone will make a film Giger wants to make to the fullest. I Love U Giger you are the greatest artist in my generation no doubt about it.

If you are an Alien fan, this book should be in your collection! It has awesome pictures from the movies and from behind the scenes (which is SUCH a bonus!). Giger was an artist even before his "Alien" creation caught on, so he is a stickler for details. This is the definitive "Alien" book! I could barely wait until my son's birthday to give it to him so that we could BOTH read it and look at the pictures! It was WORTH waiting for!
