Good resolution, horrible color,

I just got these frames from tigerdirect because it met my two requirements at a reasonable price: (1) 800x600 resolution or better, and (2) regular, non-wide screen shape. There are lots of cheap frames out there, but most of them have crappy resolutions like 480x234, which, frankly, is so blurry that the details in pictures are non-existent. And many frames use the widescreen format so the manufacturer can claim a bigger inch size for less screen space. The problem there is that most pictures you take are 4:3, not widescreen 16x9, so you either have to crop all the pictures before you load them in, or you'll lose the top and bottom of the picture, or have big black bars on the side, or have the picture be stretched sideways. It's much better to just use a 4:3 frame. This frame met both requirements and is a great bargain... or so I thought. The color of the pictures are horrible! It's almost like there are only 32 colors and the transition from color to color is ugly and obvious. I wanted to return them, looked up return policy on their website, and it turned out these are non-returnable. Man, I wish everything I bought is from Amazon or at least have the ease of returning Amazon prodocts. With no chance of returning products, this will be the last time I order from tiger direct.

After checking the specs and prices of many other frames, I believe this frame has many of the desired features offered on more expensive models yet very reasonably priced.
I have downloaded pictures directly to the frame from our computer via a USB cable, and the picture quality (both color and resolution) is very good. I have not experienced any of the problems some of the others have described here. Based on the performance it has given me, I would recommend the GiiNii GN-811, 8-inch, Slim Digital Frame.

Just received this frame. When you insert a memory card, the pictures look great. When you copy the pictures to the internal memory it minimizes them, making them look terrible! The menus and controls are bad.

I just purchased this from TigerDirect as a Christmas gift to my wife from our kids! Talk about disappointment! I too thought that the resolution to cost ratio was good and the feature set (rotating image, auto-sleep, "easy to use", etc.) was a great find. I even researched the Giinii website to get specs and user information before my purchase. I didn't think the cost was "too low to believe".
Sadly as mentioned in the previous review the colors are barely passable, the contrast is questionable and usability seems a joke! You can't delete the built in pictures and worse, if power is cycled it will automatically play them and some "funeral" music regardless of what you have loaded in the favorites category! The only way to play your own pictures automatically is to have a memory card plugged in rendering the built in memory useless. The buttons are generally non-responsive either due to physical failure or slow software. And I just found that TigerDirect appears to not sell this model on their own website! Now I will have to scramble to find a replacement. I am very disappointed with Giinii. Hopefully it can be returned.

Perhaps the quality is hit or miss?,

I bought several frames from different manufacturers (whoever had a deal) of this size for the holiday season, and I actually thought the image quality was the best on this one. I see that some of the other reviews indicate that the image quality was very poor on theirs. I can only suggest that the quality on these is not uniform. Mine really looks like I'm looking at a print of the picture - couldn't be better. Perhaps the difference lies in the picture sources? I resize all of mine to 1024x768 resolution to save space - perhaps this frame has a problem if the resolution is too high on the original picture? I'm just guessing - I've given the frame as a gift, so I can't test it out.

Nice frame for the money!,

I found the frame on Tiger but used Amazon since the shipping was cheaper by $2. Yes, I'm that cheap. The colors were very good, I'm not sure what others are expecting for the money (this isn't 1080p man). There are better frames but you will spend over $100. The setup was easy, I thought the frame was defective, I could not turn off the music when only the sample pictures were on the internal memory. Once I loaded my own pictures, the samples were not showing up anymore and then I could turn the music off. I called tech support before I loaded my pics and they were fast and knew exactly what I was asking about. I would recommend this to others. The frame itself is very nice construction and was free from any scratches or blemishes. I used a batch resize program to resize to 800x600 to save space and I had well over 100 pictures and wasn't using a fraction of the internal memory. (Visualizer Photo Resize, and it's free)

Good digital photo frame for the price,

I received this as a gift and am generally pleased. The frame has a nice modern look. Also, I like the remote control included so that way you don't have to reach behind the frame when you want to perform a function. Only things I would say could use improvement are better resolution and that you should be able to change the orientation of a pic you loaded with an SD card by using the remote. Overall this is a good buy when compared to similar models in the same price range that can be smaller and often do not include the remote.

I don't understand many of the comments I have read about this product. I bought 2 from TigerDirect through Amazon for Christmas presents. I set them up with pictures before giving them and after seeing how easy it was and how great the quality was, I bought 2 more directly from Amazon for additional presents. All of the recipients are thrilled. I recommend this product highly.

Outstanding at $40, Pass at $75,

My subject says it all. TigerDirect sold this through an E-Bay deal of the day for $40 shipped. At that price, it's a steal. Decent wood frame, remote control, good resolution, and plenty of compatible card/USB slots. Only 128MB of internal memory, so depending on your photos, a separate memory card is a must have. Who cares? They're cheap anyway.
But at $75, I would pass. Compared side-by-side with my Smartpants 8" frame with the same resolution, the Smartpants has the superior color gradations. You notice it on skin tones and background, especially fading from bright to darker backgrounds where you'll see "steps" in color rather than smooth transitions throughout. This is acceptable for $40, but not so for $75 where the price gets closer to other competitors.

Easy to use. Poor colors,

This review is from: GiiNii GN-811 8-Inch Slim Digital Picture Frame (Electronics)
I bought two of these frames for my grandparents. For this reason I wanted a frame that was very easy to just get pictures to display. In this regard I'm pretty happy. Simply insert a memory card and it starts showing the pictures. No need to resize the images or rotate them. (Putting the card in the slot was a little tricky though). The menu to change the frame's configuration doesn't look like it would be that easy for someone who isn't technically inclined, but the default configuration is already pretty good.
However, as other reviewers have pointed out, the colors are very bad. The screen appears to use 6-bit color, so subtle color differences aren't visible. This is especially egregious with skin tones. Almost all the shots of my kids look like they're wearing heavy base makeup. When I first saw the results, I felt like sending the frames back. However, after looking at reviews of this frame in comparison to others, it wasn't obvious to me that another frame would be any better. I don't have any personal experience with other digital picture frames so I can't say how the colors compare to other frames. The advertised viewing angle was supposed to be... Horizontal:140° (Left to Right) Vertical: 120° (Up to Down) I'd say the usable viewing angle was more like... Horizontal:90° (Left to Right) Vertical: 70° (Up to Down) As far as the frame's physical appearance goes, it is very thin, and I'd be happy to display it on a table or mount it on a wall. While the frame does appear to be wood, the finish applied to the wood makes it almost look like plastic. However if you don't look too closely, it's not too bad. I'm rating the frame as three stars mostly for the ease of use. It's really more like 2 1/2 stars. |
