I'm still studying and reading through it, but it has an interesting magic that's missing in many of today's similar subjects - innocence.

Cheap book with almost every work he has ever done, almost perfect, only flaw is on some of the really old stuff from the 30's and 40's they only had old calendars to
xerox from so you dont get the detail of the brush strokes and the same clarity as the others, not low quality, still clear and can see everything nicely, but just not as perfect as the others that were actual photos of the original work or high quality copies.

As a photographer and artist, I whole-heartedly agree on the comments of the previous reviewers of this excellent book. Gil Elvgren's cheesecake paintings cannot be matched even by today's standards. They inspire, but cannot be imitated. The reason why I bought this particular edition is that I wore out my softcover version of this book. To fully enjoy Elvgren's work, it must be in hardcover, and in this large format. It should be noted, that this is the second printing of this book in hardcover. The first edition is a sought after collector's item, and later editions were printed in smaller formats and in paperback. So if you are a fan of Elvgren, or just discovered this master, get this book while you can!

For an artist it is important to have a collection of perfect Pin-Ups paintings, as a way of learning how modern art can combine airbrush and brush. I think that people interested in developing Graphic Design by Computers and also learn a lot from this beautiful collection.
Thank you

He wasn't the first but he was the best. In terms of technique, taste and visual impact Gil Elvgren ranks as the modern day Rembrandt in the world of illustration of beautiful women. He was my principal inspiration as I am a nationally published illustrator and am frequently called upon to paint beautiful girls in ads. As a student at the University of Minnesota, majoring in studio art, my style and artistic goals were the pariah of most of the art faculty except the very best artist they had on the faculty staff. He understood what I wanted to achieve and I never got less than an A in any studio class. In my senior year I visited Brown & Bigelow Company in St. Paul, where I lived, and submitted samples to Clair Fry, the famous art director who commissioned Elvgren and many other top flight artists for their famous calendars. It was then that I learned that none of these men were on staff but located across the country. He loved my work and gave me great early advice as to how to get going in the commercial art business as they knew nothing about that at the U. of M. I followed his advice and started my career which has lasted over thirty years.

Gil Elvgren was the best for the reasons I previously stated but in addition his work was always in good taste. His girls were downright wholesome and "the girl next door type". They often had the look of being unaware that they were being watched and were usually caught in somewhat innocent and private moments. His work could never ever be termed salacious or perverse as so many of his later day copiers are. The art of the pinup, for the most part, has degenerated somehwhat since Gil Elvgrens day. It probably started with the advent of Playboy and Penthouse magazine and their "foldouts".

These paintings are beautiful. This is the best book of Elvgren's pinups I have found. Decent amount of full page pictures.

My SO makes fun of me because I absolutely LOVE pin-up art (I'm a woman). I would have it hanging all over the house if it didn't embarrass him so much.
That being said, I figured something a little more subtle would be a better way to share my love of this spectacular art so went in search of some pin-up books.
Gil Elvgren is a genius in his profession. His style is Iconic, beautiful, and just so well designed, and this collection is a fantastic portrayal of his work. He does a great job of capturing the clothing's weight and draping, as well as quirky cute expressions and features in the faces of all his images. For any fan of pin-up, you Must have Gil in your collection.

This book is great tribute to Gil Elvgren and his work. It is really precious, from interesting text part in three languages (en, de, fr), through the drawings themselves (with drawing year and name attached) to drawing index sorted alphabetically with reference to the book page.
If it is must to find something negative, let's say some drawings are really tiny (some 3x3 in or 7x7 cm) - see sample images. Every single one deserves full size and I believe it was painful deciding which drawings keep and which ones shrink....
It is impossible to name my favorite drawings, easier task is select those several which are 'not as favorite as other ones'.
This book simply exceeded my expectations and the price is really nice. If you are wondering about it, grab it!
