5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice knife
Very nice. Is this a knife I would choose to take into the back country with me? No! It is not a practical survival knife: too big and heavy (nice for cutting branches and other heavy work perhaps, but a pain to carry); not made from top grade steel; the guard would be getting in the way a lot (it's the one thing about this knife's design I'm not real keen on)...

2.0 out of 5 stars Put aside what other say about this knife
Ok first off I have a few things to say about this knife but i will have supporting reasons on why i feel like i do about this knife. The knife is by no means a survival knife, and I don't know why the knife is backed by the APHA. The blade is made of 420 stainless steel for a hunting knife or survival knife this is the worse possible metal. It dose not hold a sharp edge...

Very nice. Is this a knife I would choose to take into the back country with me? No! Then why 5 stars? It's a beautiful piece of work, especially for the money. I collect knives, and most of my collection will never see any real work. This is one of those. But it isn't a cheap, shiny piece of junk. It is well made, substantial, and could be used as a working knife if you wanted to. One of my top 3 (and the other 2 are much more expensive).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Buy for your Camping Future, July 11, 2011

Got this knife for this year's camping season in Oregon. We're out 2-3 times a month, minimalist camping and also group camping. The knife was bigger and heavier than expected, but has performed well. It can take out 2 in branches and harvest materials for shelters, slice through a pork shoulder, or handle most camp or survival needs. May need a baton to go through larger pieces, or chop wood into kindling. Handle pounds tent stakes well. This is sure to be a main feature in our core camping supplies, and we look forward to future use.

it met and exceded all my expectations, the sheath is really nice, hand grips is phenominal for a man with big ole hands, and the angle on the edge is just right!(for experienced sharpeners) but it comes sharp already, the only thing negative i can say about purchasing this knife is that i didnt get 2 of them!!!!!

It dose not hold a sharp edge at all and is easily breakable, you want 1095 or stronger. This knife is overly heavy, i know others said it was well balanced but its not. the handle grip that has been riveted together will break eventually and is very slippery when wet, if your hands sweat your grip will be crap, the finger placement cut out for tight grip will just get in the way when this happens. When i got this knife it was as dull as a no name black and white silent film, also the print on the handle is pixilated from computer generated wood grain blown up to big. In my honest opinion this knife will not hold up in a survival situation, its over priced for the quality, I recommend a KA-Bar fighting/utility knife full size model 1212, its full tang, blade is 1095 steel and has been used through every major war you can think of that the u.s has been in, the point is that the KA-BAR is a well known survival and self defense knife all through out America and probably the world, I would say the KA-Bar fighting/ utility knife is the worlds toughest knife and for the money you cant ask for much more than that it will last you a good 50 years or more and will keep a sharp edge for a very long time not to mention if comes from the factory very sharp. Don't wast you money on this piece of junk Alaskan Survival knife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Knife, April 16, 2011

This a solid heavy knife, it has a nice blade with a good edge to it. Makes a good hunting and utility knife and it looks really nice. It's sheath is a bit bulky but it fits alright from a belt loop.

5.0 out of 5 stars collector piece, April 21, 2011
This review is from: Gil Hibben Alaskan Survival Knife with Sheath (Sports)
I bought this knife about 8 years ago, for my collection. It's a nice knife. I paid $80 for it though. It's definitely a great buy at $50, but really not for any type of field use, unless ya don't mind constantly sharpening it. The steel (440 stainless I think) is too soft, and cheap. It would bend, break, and/or dull very quickly. However, ya probably don't have to worry about rust. The handle, on the other hand is very nice, and made out of good materials, especially for the money. The leather sheath isn't too bad either, I guess. It is of decent/ above average quality. If the blade was only made out of a better steel, it may have been a $200+ knife. Most likely this knife is modeled after a $1,000-1,500 knife, since it is a Gil Hibben design. Authentic/original Hibben knives can cost thousands, but the market is flooded with chinese replicas, endorsed by Gil. Anyway, this knife is a "steel" at 50 bucks.
