very useful, overpriced,

This review is from: Gila Complete Window Film Application Kit (Misc.)
The squeegees and application spray work very well. I used the entire bottle of spray up doing 4 windows (2 were 34"x30" and 2 34"x42") which collectively used up a bit less than one roll of the film (and I added some water and tried to be frugal with the stuff starting about halfway through the job). If you are doing more windows you may need extra bottles of the application spray (they are available separately at Lowe's). The razor knife didn't work very well - it had a tendency to tear rather than cleanly cut the film, leaving a ragged edge (not too bad - it wasn't really noticable except on very close inspection). I used a higher quality utility knife I already had instead with better results. Overall I think this kit makes doing a good job installing the film much easier, and I would buy and use it again based on my experience. It is overpriced for what you get - I doubt the items cost more than a buck or two to make and package. But the time and frustration it is likely to save are almost certainly worth more than the cost. Tip: I found the kit at Lowes for half of the $16 amazon is currently charging.

Better tools needed,

The solution does what it should, but the cheap, poorly manufactured knife is dull enough for a dimwitted toddler to play with, no worries. If you have to do window film, and personally, after my experience I am 100% against it, then buy a good quality exacto knife. You'll have use for it later for other projects and this one cannot be done without a sharp, stable cutting edge. In fact, a kitchen knife might work better than the knife-like thing in the kit.

Used kit to put film on window in bathroom 8 months ago. Debating trying to do without buying the kit, but I think that the kit and especially the solution is the reason why my film hasn't peeled, bubbled, or moved at all over the past 8 months. Since this is in our only bathroom too, it definitely gets plenty of steam exposure.

the knife stopped working after two panels. I think it's made of plastic so cheap that the blade was pushed back in.unfortunately we don't have any other knife suitable for this purpose. the rest of this kit worked fine, but $8 is definitely a rip off given their quality.

Good spray solution, but not a good kit solution,

The included spray solution works well but the company's website mentions that you can use filtered water and baby shampoo. The included trimming tool is poorly made, not very sharp, and can do more harm than good. At close to $50 per roll for some of the products, do you really want to risk snagging an edge and tearing it?The little plastic squeegee tool is similar to a wallpaper tool. A good one can also guide your trimming. Any reasonably lint free cloth should do. Lint, or hair, or a spec of dust from the environment would be a potential problem, but the cloth is low on the list of causes. The kit isn't comprehensive. You'll still need everything but the solution and the plastic tool. I'm not overlooking the convenience of the package. I'm simply not satisfied with the quality of the trimmer. Bundling the plastic tool with the spray means getting another each time you buy a bottle. Selling it separately would make more sense. They would have been better off including a bottle of concentrate because their kit won't go far. If you start out with this kit, you won't have to question whether the problems are due to you or to your alternate tools. But I'd still stay away from the included trimmer. The rest of the items will work fine, but of all the things a kit could have contained, they missed the boat.

OK,
This review is from: Gila Complete Window Film Application Kit (Misc.)
I purchased this kit to go with some Gila privacy window film. It worked ok, though I have a feeling I may have gotten along just fine without it.The razor blade is a joke, and is the worst part of this kit. It barely gives you any of the blade, and I'd rather just use a box cutter or fabric cutter, or even a sharp utility knife. The squeegee is ok, but is tiny. You probably have something lying around your garage that would work just as well. I think the squeegee should have been larger. You can buy a much better squeegee as a standalone product. I'm not sure exactly what is in the spray or whether it's necessary or not. I used it when applying my Gila window film. However, the same day I also installed some window film from a different brand, and that brand simply called for using a spray bottle filled with water and a drop of soap. I have a feeling the same solution would have done just fine with the Gila film as well, but just to be safe I used the solution provided in this kit.

I wouldn't even try to complete the project of installing window "film" without this product. The solution is perfect for application of the film. It is best to use the "towel-over-smoother" technique. It makes soaking up the excess solution a breeze. USe the solution LIBERALLY for best results. Remember, coat both sides of the film! This is a great little kit. All you need to complete the project. Recommended!

Gila Install Kit,
This review is from: Gila Complete Window Film Application Kit (Misc.)
While it works well the wetting solution in the kit causes some lung irritation even when used in open areas. Soapy water in a spray bottle works just as well and doesn't irritate. The "squeegee" while useful can be duplicated by the used of a credit card or other semi-hard piece of plastic. The cutter/trimmer works OK, but is essentially a one-use item good for the amount of window film in the package. What is really needed is the edge tool Gila used to sell, which was a triangular piece of plastic with slots at the corner and along the edges. This thing held down the film in the corner and by inserting the cutter in the slots, clean accurate cuts could be made without tearing the film. Not true with the included cutter, even when used in conjunction with the squeegee to hold the film down- the squeegee can hold only one side of the corner at a time. The cost of this kit would be better spent on something else.

Don't install without this kit,
This review is from: Gila Complete Window Film Application Kit (Misc.)
I just installed the Gila Heat Film Platinum on 5 small windows (3x4) in my house over the weekend. This kit makes everything a breeze. The spray works as expected, I actually used a lot of spray to make sure that I will not have any problem with the film sticking to itself or having bubbles in the window so I ran out of spray halfway through my project. I simply added some more water to the spray bottle it still works as a charm. On my last window, I have to make my own solution with baby soap and distilled water. I noticed that it takes more time to remove all the bubbles and fingers on the film using my own mixture but I was still able to get the job done. I'm not sure how will my own mixture perform when it comes to quality of the installation, only time will tell. The Squeegee works great but I guess that you will need a bigger one for larger windows or patio doors. The lint free cloth helps a lot in removing excess water. The blade is sharp and have the built in 1/16 edge that you need to get all the water out under the film. The old kit have a ruler but this one does not. I actually went back to Lowe's where I bought this item and ask if they have the kit that comes with the ruler. They pointed out that the razor on the new kit already gives you that 1/16 inch edge and it is stated on the package. This actually makes it easier to use. The only thing is that the blade seem to lose its sharpness on my last window that I have to press harder to make sure that I cut the film. I'm now planning on installing film on my hallway windows. |
