This review is from: Gilbert Law Summaries on Civil Procedure (Paperback)
This book is very helpful in laying out an outline for civil procedure, especially for a 1L class. I found it useful in filling in the blanks that the professor had left as well as making connections that I didn't previously understand.

Good, but could be better,

If your class/textbook deals only with Fed. R. Civ. P. (as in my situation), then there are a lot of sections in this book that does not pertain to you. They discuss both the code and rules procedure, so you may have to sift out the unnecessary stuff. Otherwise, it has very good overview of the subject.

use the gilbert's, not the emanuel's,

I initially began studying with the Emanuel's, but switched to the Gilbert's because it covered more topics in greater detail than the Emanuel's. In my preparation for the California bar exam, I appreciate the Gilberts' inclusion of specific citations to California law where appropriate.

I find Gilbert's to be the most effective supplement for preparing for essay questions. The flowcharts and "approach to exams" section are invaluable.

I bought this book as part of the The First Year Program which contains a total of five outlines (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Property, and Torts), plus Gilbert's Dictionary of Legal Terms and Gilbert's 8 Secrets of Top Exam Performance in Law School by Charles Whitebread. It got me through my first year of law school and I highly recommend them to all first year law students.
