Editorial Reviews

These eleven new releases in the Classics for Pleasure series feature some of the finest orchestral and vocal music ever composed. Works for orchestra include Brahms's towering Piano Concertos, Bach's intimate Cello Suites, Haydn's elegant London Symphonies, and Tchaikovsky's wrenching Pathetique Symphony, while vocal music is represented by Strauss's autumnal Four Last Songs, and highlights from Wagner's Ring Cycle, Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras, and Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers. These definitive performances feature artists such as Paul Tortelier, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Adrian Boult, Victoria de los Angeles, Bernard Haitink, and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Entries in the Sargent Series February 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD
One of my favorite Sargent/EMI recordings, this Gondoliers is a worthy addition to any G&S collection, if perhaps not my first choice. I'd probably give that title to either the 1961 D'Oyly Cart (DOC) recording with dialogue (Gilbert & Sullivan: The Gondoliers) or the 1927 DOC recording with its wonderful cast (get the Sounds on CD issue on the web if you're willing to go for a vintage recording). I did not find the New DOC recording to be anything particularly special (Gilbert & Sullivan: The Gondoliers).

Alright, on to the performance. Yes, there are a couple places where Sargent sets a funeral dirge tempo (The Cachucha and "With ducal pomp" come to mind), but on the whole this is a solid reading of this sunny opera.

Geraint Evans and Monica Sinclair are a great ducal couple; Sargent gives Sinclair a quick tempo for her song that works very well. Owen Brannigan gives an excellent performance of Don Alhambra (both of his songs are taken at a good clip too). Edna Graham is (IMO) better than Jennifer Toye as Casilda (on the 1961 recording), though she still sounds a bit nervous in her duets with Alexander Young as a splendid Luiz.

Marjorie Thomas gives a lovely "When a merry maiden marries," though she doesn't go for the high F at the end. Elsie Morison is her typical self, and if "Kind sir, you cannot have the heart" doesn't find her at her most comfortable, she makes up for it in the rest of the opera. Good singing from the two gondoliers, Richard Lewis and John Cameron as Marco and Giuseppe. Double casting fills in some of the gaps in the smaller parts.
