Editorial Reviews

A dazzling success at the Stratford Festival, The Gondoliers has been described as a musical approach to fairytale hilarity. Set in Venice, circa 1750, the nonsensical yet delightful plot involves two gondoliers who rule a Spanish duchy on the assumption that one is a foundling prince. The Gondoliers was to be Gilbert & Sullivan's last success, and it is just as funny and refreshing as when first staged over a hundred years ago.

In a rather sterile world of DVD & video performances of this operetta, most of them chopped to pieces and looking like pizzerias, this gorgeous production restores "The Gondoliers" to its original concept of late 17th - early 18th century Italian charm in all of its wonder and grace and beauty. The chorus is spirited and handsome, like so many prancing circus ponies. The scene-changing mimes are lovely Italian clowns in the best sense of the word, and all of the story's characters are perfection. The Duchess, played by a man in drag, was inspired, and the prize performance goes to the incomparable Richard McMillan as the definative (for me) Grand Inquisitor. But as gondolier Guiseppi himself would say, there is just one little grievance that we should like to ventilate. Possibly due to the constraints of time, the wonderful quintette, "I am a Courtier grave and serious..." was not included in this performance. This is a most unfortunate omission that so far all DVDs of this otherwise perfect classic have made. But that one flaw aside, you cannot ask for a prettier, better performed Gondoliers than this. You will certainly want it added to your collection.

One of the very best overture sequences I've ever seen in a musical, when a group of mummers create the opening scene -absolutely brilliant. The comedy element is hilarious, especially the the Inquisitor! The recording quality isn't the best, but it's well worth putting up with for the wonderful performance!

I really LOVE this theatre group from Canada... they really are a great bunch of people who put on a great show. I am not able to travel anymore, beacause of my disability but if I could, I would surely go to this place in Canada! :)

This movie made of a Canadian production of "The Gondoliers" is tasteful, lively, skillful, with timely anachronistic jokes inserted into the original text. Voices and action are wonderful. The ONLY flaw is that the famous Gavotte in Act II seems to be missing--why?
