Editorial Reviews

Released in 1971 while Gil was living in London, this is the 3rd self-titled release from the bosssa nova and tropicalia legend. Gil recorded this album while in political exile from his native Brazil and its somber, straightforward tone is a welcome change frm the experimental, psychedelic assault of his 1969 long player. Featuring 7 originals and a brilliant cover of Steve Winwood's Can't Find My Way Home', this Water release also contains 3 bonus tracks including covers of Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles. A tropicalia classic. Reissued 2007.

This album was originally released in 1969 and happens to be Gilberto Gil's greatest album. This 2008 reissue from Water, on the other hand, is far from the best. I say this because, for one, the artwork is severly cropped, so that the Philips recording company logo couldn't be seen on here. This reissue contains all of the original 9 songs that were on the album. However, the five bonus tracks that are on the Philips/Mercury/Universal CD reissues (1998 & 2006) of this album are missing. I find this odd because many of the Gilberto Gil reissues that Water has brought out on CD contains all of the bonus tracks that were on the 1998 & 2006 CD reissues for those particular albums, such as the 1968 self-titled album, the 1971 self-titled album and even "Expresso 2222". The bonus tracks for those albums are contained on the Water reissues. However, there are no bonus tracks for this album at all. This may be great to have for those of you who have it hard trying to find any of the old Universal reissues. However, if you can find the old Universal reissues on CD with the 5 bonus tracks added along with the original album, skip this one at all costs!

i was a little surprised that the people who went nuts for the cd reissues of the first 3 mutantes albums didn't go crazy for this album. trust me, this cd is just as good, if not better. it basically mines the same musical territory,so if you like the early mutantes, please read on. perhaps this disc's...price tag has scared many people away...the music, you ask? imagine a (slightly) tighter first album era mutantes (meaning great tunes, insane f/x and far out production). gil's back up band is more or less the same band as that which played on caetano veloso's slightly less brilliant 1969 "white album". yes folks, that means you get the one and only lanny gordin on lead guitar. the stylistic range runs from straight samba (aquele abraco), to brasilian piper at the gates of dawn style psyche tunes (a voz do vivo). gil also includes an amazing cover of rita lee's "2001" which has to be heard to be believed. mere words can not do it justice. ("2001" also has the MOST insane guitar sounds this side of white light white heat-thanx lanny!). "vitrines","futerivel", and "objecto semi identificado" are all incredible listens as well. this disc really is a must have for any brasilian music collection, AS WELL AS any psychedelic music collection. however, chill out music it ain't. be ready for your mind to split open.

this is a must have if you're a gilberto gil fan. recorded in london while in exile, it's an album which is very stripped down and intimate. it's not tropicalia music but it is his first album after the movement passed. a very valid time period in the artist's discography.
