As a frequent Tarot reader for young people, I find myself having to give meanings for cards to participants over and over again. But that stopped just as soon as I discovered the Gill Tarot. I've worn out two decks of Gill Tarot cards, and am now on my third deck.

The pictures of both the Major and Minor Arcana are very beautiful and colorful. The backs contain a Tree of Life and the symbols for it. A great deal of the symbolism that inspired these cards comes directly from classical religious literature. The one thing I didn't like about the backs is that the Tree of Life background makes it obvious when reversed cards are dealt. But, since Elizabeth Gill recommends not using reversed meanings with her deck, maybe that's not such a bad thing after all.

The cards are a strange oversize, a little wider than quite a few of the other deck in my small collection. There's a small white border around the art, and names on all the cards. But I found the width easy to use, and the cards seemed to have good stiffness, without being too hard or inflexible.

The Major Arcana are enough like the standard Rider/Waite Tarot to be understandable to even a novice, but have enough symbolism to enchant the most dedicated readers. But it is the Minor Arana that stopped most of my questions from younger subjects. All of the Minor Arcana have a single word written on them to provide a basic meaning for that card. Although some may find this limiting, simple readings do not have to be an in depth look at the soul - just answers to simple questions. And the same level of symbolism is on all of the Minor Arcana - so if you want to "wing it" you can.

The small included 24 page booklet gives you the basics of these cards as well as a sample layout - and it's not a Celtic Cross either! It's a simplified "Tree of Life" layout that can add a great deal of richness and depth to a standard reading.

I find myself being drawn back to this deck over and over again from the ones I own. A good second deck for beginners, and experienced readers will find new meanings in Gill's cards. If you haven't seen it, it has one of my highest recommendations.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very nice deck - excellent for the beginner, April 5, 2000

I do like this tarot deck. A lot of effort was put into the major arcana cards as they are very well drawn. The colors used are a bit different from most of the decks that I have seen and really seem to suit the cards meaning. The minor arcana cards are nice and are quite different from any that I have seen before. All have rather large numbers on them and the symbol of their suit. There is also a bit of a picture or a artistic background to reflect the mood of the card. Each card is also labeled with the meaning of the card which is good for the beginner, but is perhaps too resticting as a card can have several meanings. It is a very nice deck and is a good addition to anyones collection.

I have owned this Deck and used it for over 4 years. This is the most beautiful and awesome deck I have ever used or seen. Everyone I have done a reading for with this deck is so impressed by it's beauty. I actually ordered this deck as a gift for my Daughter in Law! She had never been exposed to TAROT and this really made an impression on her and her husband. If you want a deck that has beautiful artwork, is nontradtional and is easy to read, this is THE DECK for you!!! Enjoy the gifts of Tarot that the Gill Deck can bring to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, insightful, and beautiful., September 23, 2007
This review is from: The Gill Tarot Deck: 78-Card Deck (Cards)
I have owned this deck for many, many years. After purchasing and trying out numerous other decks, I seem to always return to this one. A tarot deck must speak to the reader, and this one speaks to my heart and always has something fascinating and new to tell me. The drawings are rich and multilayered, crossing boundaries of ethnicity and gender, but such authenticity seems to have been channeled through the author almost subconsciously, as it appears natural rather than intentional and forced. The colors in this deck are extensive and well utilized, ranging from pastels to primary colors. The cards are sturdy and a pleasing, practical size. Although based on the Tree of Life, they are easily adapted to any style of use as well as a wide range of spreads. I recommend this deck highly, and hope it will become a treasured companion on your life path, as it has been for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, May 11, 2009
This review is from: The Gill Tarot Deck: 78-Card Deck (Cards)
I can connect with this deck. The pictures, vibrant colours are very intuitive.Readings are so easy with this deck. I never go back to the LWB. Card picture are a bit large, and so hard to shuffle. The size is similar to the size of Goddess Tarot normal version. But seldom I find a card so easy to read, I wouldn't mind a trivial thing.

Gill Tarot is a stepping stone for me to learn the system of a very difficult Thoth Tarot minor cards.

Highly recommended for easy reading deck lookers and those interested in the Thoth system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review, January 14, 2004
This review is from: The Gill Tarot Deck: 78-Card Deck (Cards)
Elizabeth Gill is my mother. Writing under her maiden name, Gill, she is actually Elizabeth Gray. My mother is the most intelligent, wise person that I have ever met. She has been the soul source of inspiration to me, throughout my life. To aspire to reflect some of her qualities would be a noble task.
My mother has taught me countless lessons in life. Her thoughts are profound, yes she doesn't claim to know all the answers, and rarely rates her own opinion. She is humourous and warm, yet sparklingly intelligent.
My mother wrote the tarot while I was a young child. I vaguely remember her doing so. I have learnt a lot from my mother, and I have a lot more to learn from her work. She has drawn from many sources, when writing her work. She has a poignant understanding of humanity, she heavily draws on Jungian Psychology, and Platonic archetypes.
What I am illiterately attempting to say is that this book, coming from such a wise and fine mind is condensed genius for me, personally. I wouldnt like to guess at what an audience will think of it, it's hard to be ambiguous on this particular subject, but read it, if you will... and maybe you can feel what kind of woman she is.
