Book Description

Gillian Griffiths is flummoxed about what to do after she is unexpectedly fired from her job of more than twenty years. While trying to repair her professional life, she steps way out of her comfort zone and signs onto an online dating service. To her amazement, she encounters more men than she'd ever expected. She insists that any mid-life romantic encounter must include world class sparks, but thus far—even with Mo, a local doctor who is smitten with her—no sparks ignite. That is, until she seeks help from attorney Matt Gordon to set up a trust for her.

Unfortunately, Matt is married and caring for a tragically ill wife. Sparks or not, Gillian respects his dedication to his wife and doesn't follow up on her feelings toward him. She feels deeply for his loss when his wife dies and can't help wondering … will he act on the sparks he might feel in Gillian’s presence or will grief and guilt overwhelm him?

When Matt mistakes Gillian’s sympathy hug for something else, and he pushes her away, he realizes he needs a do-over. How can he convince Gillian he really does care for her, or has he killed his chance of finding a new love?

Editorial Reviews

Review

A story any woman "of a certain age" will love. Gillian's experiences are too much like that of my friends--me, too!--though her experiences contain more humor and less heartache. A great story! - Elaine D.

From the Author

I simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to explore what happens to a woman who is unexpectedly fired and thus finds herself at loose ends and in her mid-40s. Too young to retire, but it sounds so much better than being fired, what is she to do?  What so many women are now exploring--the internet dating scene!  But does it represent a godsend and source of new friends or a source of danger?  Gillian finds out through a series of web-generated encounters, only to discover that men not on the internet are also around.  Will she find someone? Where? And what, exactly, will her do-over consist of?

4.0 out of 5 stars Midlife "Do-Over" Reaches Out to Readers December 3, 2013
Format:Paperback
Gillian, 46, has 20 years into her career as a successful office manager with an overbearing and inconsiderate boss. That less-than-stellar status quo gets shattered when said boss fires her out of the blue.

Now Gillian has to consider her life: Her son is grown and on his own; she has no job, no romantic partners since she divorced Quinn's father, no hobbies, and precious few friends. At the urging of her best friend Lauren and her son, Gillian pokes her head out of the cocoon she's been living in, and discovers she loves to draw, she enjoys dating, and a little adventure whitewater rafting is ... well. Two out of three ain't bad!

Gillian's self-discovery is aided by a series of online-dating-service flames, the ardent attentions of a strong, protective physician, Mo, and the unwilling regard of a handsome married attorney, Matt, whose wife is seriously ill.

Vale helps readers see the complexity of rebuilding a life, the complications of forming new relationships, and the difficulty of leaving behind old loyalties, in this careful weaving of realistic modern life with a whiff of fairytale romance. Readers can easily relate to Gillian's struggle to find her way among the flattering attentions of online beaus, her genuine affection for Mo, and the sparks that fly around the forbidden Matt. Matt's guilt and grief as he fights his attraction to Gillian is believable, too. Gillian's adventures and dilemmas give readers the feeling that maybe they, too, could try out a "do-over" of their own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Do Over December 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Do-Over was not the usual romance novel. First of all it's more of my generation and what we face when life throws you a curve ball. The plot was amazing with normal people (not everyone looking like greek gods) that I can relate to. If you're looking for something with a lot of sex then this is not for you but I can tell you that you'll be missing out on a great story. Kate Vale is a new favorite author for me and I highly recommend this book to everyone who will listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good contemporary romance December 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this story about mature adults who are getting back into the dating scene after the end of a marriage. The book was well written and there were only some minor editing/formatting problems that didn't distract too much from the story. The characters were mature adults dealing with everything from forced retirement to the long-term illness and death of a spouse, adult children, new dating tools such as internet social networking sites, and midlife career changes. The characters were interesting and the plot revolved around the characters and their relationships and lives. Kudos to the author for a good romance involving people over 45 years young.

Heat factor moderate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gillian's Do-Over March 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Life changes in a day when confident Gillian Griffiths is fired by her despicable boss who is on the way out of business himself. This gives her all kinds of time to explore and expand her art career and a new interest in male companionship after many years of being on her own and in the primary role of mother. On-line dating…is it the best idea yet, or full of possible peril? Fortunately Gillian meets Matt Gordon in the flesh – a charming, loyal man grieving the loss of his wife even before her death. Vale’s characters are so real, with every day worries and concerns and bright outlooks on how to start over when that time comes.

5.0 out of 5 stars loving it February 28, 2014

it's nice to read love stories of people who are mature enough to appreciate the fact that life does not give everybody a second chance. So, when it does give you one, grab it with both hands no matter what age, no matter what stage in life. i Love this story.

More About the Author

Hi - I'm a fiction writer living and working in the beautiful Fourth Corner of the Pacific Northwest, not far from the Canadian border, within one hour of Mt. Baker (our closest local volcano) and minutes from the shore of the beautiful Puget Sound, northern section. On a clear day, I can see the San Juan Islands, the Canadian Coastal range to the north and the Cascade Range to the east.

Living between Seattle and Vancouver, BC means I can enjoy the quieter life and slower pace of a small city and still be in easy range of the pleasures of a world-class city and all it has to offer. In this case, two of them!

My stories reflect the different careers I've had and are set (mostly) in and around where I live, though the towns named are not necessarily ones you've visited, though you might want to.

My characters experience crises that confront real men and women. Wouldn't it be great if the real people you and I know could also enjoy similar happily-ever-afters?

I hope you enjoy my stories and I'd love to hear from you, my readers. Feel free to email me at katevale@sent.com.
