Product Description

Where, when and how much to water. Gilmours electronic single outlet timer has a daily clock option of 12 or 24 hours, can skip cycles for 2nd or 3rd days, and has manual or timed on-off settings. The angled display makes for easier reading and the battery voltage meter monitors available power. Has 1 on-off watering cycle with a two minute minimum watering time. The time counts down on screen during watering and the screen is backlit for better visibility. The electronics separate from the water valve for ease of programming or removal for security, just squeeze the side grips and pull to remove. Requires 2 AA batteries (not included).

This timer works as advertised. Programming is limited but simple to do. It has a nice slow-closing valve, so there are no issues with water hammer. I had first purchased an Orbit brand timer that had more programming options, which was nice, but the valve on that one slammed shut, causing bad water hammer. I was afraid my pipes might burst. The one button I miss from the Orbit is the one that cancelled watering for 24 hours.

This item works ok but you better not lose the instructions, because programming is not intuitive. Also there is no cover over the control panel, so sunlight and water exposure could be a problem. I cover mine with a piece of aluminum foil. It is valve-operated rather than the superior diaphragm type. Valve types use more battery power than the diaphragm types, and some (not necessarily this one) are short-lived.

After one year the toggle lever that opens the battery compartment broke off in my hand. Very fragile.

After 1.5 years I found it inoperative and absolutely full of water. I don't know how the water got in. Batteries were soaked and destroyed, but electronics were only slightly wet. After dry-out and new batteries the unit seems to work. Will see what happens.

While it may not be the greatest timer out there. There are few options for running drip systems from rain barrels or gravity feed tanks. The ball valve in this timer can handle these low pressures. All timers from Orbit, Nelson and Melnor rely on the water pressure to assist in opening the valve. They may work for a few days but the batteries die quickly. The only other low pressure (or no pressure) timers are the toro and a few discontinued timers that are still floating around out there. So this timer is worth trying if you have a rain barrel. Just hold onto the sales receipt.

This worked great for awhile. It solved multiple problems I was having. After a few months it began making a noise as if it was struggling to turn the switch on and off. Read more
