4.0 out of 5 stars punk-influenced, rocking number, August 22, 2007
This review is from: Gimme Splash (Audio CD)
The solo debut of former Luscious Jackson guitarist Gabby Glaser is a sophisticated rock fan's dream: a medley of sounds and styles with heavy doses of punk influence, full of catchy melodies and good hooks. The opening track, "Spirit of Long Island," is both driving and laid-back, with a groove that reminds you of long, lazy summer days but an intensity of spirit. "You Eyes" is a gentle ballad with amusing lyrics ("you're kind of a freak, but so nice") and a mellow sound. If there's such a thing as a drawling guitar, you'll hear it on this song.

"Fruit Is Sweet" stands out for its interesting syncopated rhythm and the atonal chant "my heart's alive, my heart's alive," which quickly gets under your skin. Synthesizer features heavily on this track, an amalgam of '80s dance music with a touch of punk. As its name would imply, "Balls Out" is a punk-influenced, rocking number with plenty of attitude, a fast tempo, and staccato bursts of instrumentation. The fast-paced "So Satisfied," featuring harmonica, piano, and a driving rhythm, is among the disc's best tunes and will have you tapping your feet. Glaser's lyrics aren't revolutionary, but are clever upon occasion and fit the songs perfectly. It's the music that holds center court on this album, which has definitely found a place on my summer listening list.
