Search for great Ginastera sonata, September 22, 2007
This review is from: Ginastera: Music for Piano (Audio CD)
Ginastera's first piano sonata is one of my favorite pieces. I have collected several recordings of it in my attempt at finding the one I most enjoyed. This one is second on my list, and at the top of those done by a pianist. I must specify this because my favorite recording of the sonata is Sergio & Odair Assad's arrangement for two guitars. Anyway, Rodriguez has great rhythm, which I think is essential to this piece. Though I know this sonata is very difficult, too many pianists allow themselves to have terrible rhythm in favor of just being able to get all the notes. I like to call this "technical rubato." There is no musical reason for it. Only one thing stands in the way of me LOVING this recording. It is very dry (no reverb, or close to it). Other than that, this is the best piano recording of Ginastera's first piano sonata that I have been able to find.
