Book Description

October 4, 2011
Mixologist, raconteur, and author A. J. Rathbun returns with the newest addition to his spirits collection. Following in the tradition of his previous cocktail books, Ginger Bliss and the Violet Fizz features 200 recipes that demystify all manner of liquors and liqueurs, focusing both on the drinks of old, made popular during the early twentieth century, as well as on more contemporary concoctions. Like a good gathering, the book includes a mix of lively, vivacious stories and sidebars along with serious cocktail knowledge that will appeal to newly minted mixologists as well as to seasoned pros. Chapters are organized by flavor profile and cover citrus, floral, fruity, herbal, nutty, spicy, sweet, and vermouth-based. This hybrid approach to old and new includes a breadth of information and recipes not typically found in modern cocktail books, with historical cocktail appeal that's fun to read.

Wow! more than I bargained for, had other books by the author, saw the title ...and the Violet Fizz, I love to garden, have violets in the yard, planned to make drinks for gardening friends. Beautiful pictures, easy to follow directions, loved the quotes, a mix of simple to sophisticated

4.0 out of 5 stars Recipes sound wonderful, but ingredients too exotic December 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really liked reading the recipes and looking at the pictures in this book which I originally received as a gift and in turn 'gifted' to two other people. One of them, my favorite bartender and the other my daughter-in-law who makes her own liquors, both of them really liked it. While the recipes sound like lots of fun, the ingredients are somewhat exotic and not readily available in our state controlled liquor stores. My only wish would be that acceptable substitutions had been given. This might be a great gift if accompanied by one of the aforementioned, exotic spirits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible Recipes, Fabulous Results April 20, 2012

I love cocktails, but it seemed too overwhelming to make them at home. Prior to reading GBVF, typical gatherings at my place were strictly beer and wine affairs. This book left me excited to mix fancy drinks for a crowd. More than simple love for exotic booze, A.J. Rathbun's enthusiasm for sharing well-made, handcrafted cocktails seems to come from a genuine sense of hospitality that comes through on every page. This author had me imagining gatherings with friends and occasions for sharing while I explored new recipes, rare ingredients, and mixing techniques. Any cocktail made from this book is sure to impress--highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty Beverages March 6, 2012
By Dreweb
Format:Hardcover
I got this book after meeting the author at the release party downtown at Rob Roy's where they were making some of his drinks from the book. I love complex whiskey and rye based cocktails but I never have some of the special liquors in my own bar and to be honest was a bit intimidated to try to make them myself. I bought a copy to give as a gift to my brand new fiances family for the holidays and bravely planed to make 2 cocktails from the book. I was unfamiliar with some of the liquor selections, I wrote the author and he walked me through them and gave me possible alternative ingredients for the ones I could not find readily available in New Jersey. They turned out great and were the smash of the party, literally. AJ is kind of a Seattle icon and we love his drinks and his writing style. This is a unique selection of drinks with some classics everyone has heard of and some new twists and concepts for very tasty beverages. Dig it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Drinks Coupled with a Good Read February 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This isn't just a collection of yummy liqueur-based cocktail recipes. "Ginger Bliss and the Violet Fizz" also weaves a compelling narrative throughout its pages regarding the history behind these drinks and their various components. Rathbun tells theses libations' tales in a voice that is a combo of master mixologist and seasoned storyteller topped off with a twist. Definitely a good addition to any cocktail lover's library. Oh, and the pictures are pretty, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheers to this book! December 19, 2011

Format:Hardcover
So A.J. has done it again, bringing creative and delicious cocktails to booze aficionados. With easy to follow recipes, he introduced me to new spirits and quenched my thirst. it was a Saturday night, okay it was a Tuesday but nevertheless it was time for a drink. I happened to have a recently opened but barely used bottle of St. Germain lying around. I didnt know what to do with the liquor so i flipped to the "Mexican Bouquet". Any drink with St. Germain and tequila can't be bad. and it wasn't. not too sour, with a touch of sweetness, A.J. introduced me to a new favorite. i can hardly wait to flip to the next recipe! a great book all around!
