Book Description

3 and upP and up

"Run run run as fast as you can. You can't catch me! I'm the gingerbread man."

In this modern retelling of a nursery classic, Caldecott-winning illustrator Richard Egielski adds an urban twist to a well-loved tale. This time, the gingerbread boy is on the loose in New York City, and he taunts everyone from construction workers to subway musicians, until his fateful chase through Central Park!

The chase is on! When the gingerbread boy rises from butter and molasses, everyone wants him for a snack. But the gingerbread boy has other ideas. He hops out the window, slides down the fire escape, and runs through the streets of New York City, while the bakers, construction workers, musicians, a policeman, and even a city rat drop everything they’re doing in hot pursuit. The oh-so-proud gingerbread boy thinks he can out run them all, until he meets a wily fox who doesn’t chase the gingerbread boy at all.

In this exhilarating retelling, Caldecott Medal winner Richard Egielski modernizes and urbanizes the nursery classic, bringing the gingerbread boy in from the fields to the hubbub of the city, playing up the fun of a bunch of grownups leaving work in the middle of the day to chase a cookie.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW said that the author nicely balances "an unembellished text" with "minutely detailed images" in this take on the tale of a prideful cookie. Ages 3-7. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3. Oven-hot, a delectable doughboy dashes through the city streets, chased by a growing group of hungry New Yorkers until he's snapped up by a fox in Central Park. A tasty twist on a favorite recipe.

5.0 out of 5 stars The urban Gingerbread Boy story, September 1, 2000
By

This review is from: The Gingerbread Boy (Paperback)
Set in New York City, Richard Egielski's version of The Gingerbread Boy is a treat for the eyes. The illustrations are richly detailed and colorful, and my 3 year old son loves this modern version. He and I talk about the characters and details, telling stories within the story. Our favorite illustration shows of a group of construction workers who pause in their work to chase that irresistible gingerbread boy. My son really loves the chase scenes, but the picture of the fox eating the gingerbread boy is a little scary. We highly recommend this version to readers 3 and up.

As a kindergarten teacher, this is a wonderful addition to my Gingerbread Man Unit. The city elements add so much fun to the gingerbread man story. The class loves the rat. I am able to extend the learning by using compare/ contrast discussions and Venn diagrams. If you are looking for a fun book to read this would fit the bill!

my family loves this book - especially after having lived in NY for awhile. it shows the subway, the fire escapes of apartment buildings, construction workers...everything you have in NY. it's a fun, very entertaining book. i'd recommend it to city lovers, and have bought a few for people who have visited us.
