5.0 out of 5 stars The Gingerbread Pirates
Reading "The Gingerbread Pirates" is our new family tradition. In early December we'll bake & decorate gingerbread pirates for our friends & Santa. Precious happy time with our kids. Delightful story & illustrations. Love this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought!!
I hated this book!!!! I bought it thinking it was another version of the traditional gingerbread stories with a twist, but I was completely wrong. It was nothing at all like a gingerbread story and was long and boring on top of it. My 8 year old daughter started to read it, but closed the book after only 3 pages. I was hoping to use it in my classroom, but I will be...

Outstanding! Lots of fun! Not boring, (in my opinion) as another reviewer wrote)!! Jim and his mother baked Christmas pirate cookies (made out of gingerbread), on Christmas Eve. Jim takes the Captain ookie and places him on his night stand. During the night, Captain cookie comes to life and searches for his crew . . . meets Santa Claus etc. My 4 year old (boy) and 7 year old (girl) loved it! As well as mom!

My 6 year old got this book right before Christmas and it quickly became one of our favorite stories. Beautiful pictures and even now after Christmas it is still on our bedtime must read list frequently!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Boys, December 16, 2010
This review is from: The Gingerbread Pirates (Hardcover)
My 3.5 year old son loved this book about swashbuckling cookie pirates. The story presents an original twist on the classic Christmas magic story, as Captain Cookie works to gather his crew and save them from being consumed by Santa on Christmas Eve. Staircases become cliffs, a cookie jar a prison, and a Christmas tree a glowing beacon in the night. Though the language is complex for a preschooler at times (cutlass, peg leg, cannons, cannibal), and I worried the concept would be a little challenging, my son was able to follow the story with surprising ease. The pictures are so clear they help to teach concepts, should you wish to. The first time we read it, we got to the last page (spoiler alert!) and my son gasped and exclaimed, "The cookie turned into a real toy!" I love that he grasped this concept; the idea was not directly spelled out, but implied from one line of text and a picture. That's great storytelling.

I bought this book for my grandsons. They love pirates and making gingerbread men, what a perfect combination for a story! I ordered 2 more copies, one for my house and one for my grandson who is still too little, but will love it when he gets older! The pictures are adorable and love the ending!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Story!, January 3, 2012
This review is from: The Gingerbread Pirates (Hardcover)
I bought this for my 6 year old son but my 2.5 year old daughter really likes it as well. Nicely illustrated, the story is original and fun! Very suprised that another reviewer called it "boring" as our whole family enjoyed it. This is a keeper and will appeal to most kids in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet book for any kid who loves pirates!, November 17, 2011
This review is from: The Gingerbread Pirates (Hardcover)
The illustrator visited our school so I bought this book and had it signed for my boys. My 3yo boy LOVES this book and when I read it, he runs to get his own toy pirate ship to "sleep" next to his bed. We said we'd make, or try to make, gingerbread pirate cookies this holiday.
