Great knifes at great price!,

We had been in the market for some kitchen knifes for sometime, I decided to visit Amazon.com to see what was available. I had heard in the past how great Ginsu knifes were so we decided to give them a try. We are 100% satisfied with this product, would recommend to anyone looking for a good set of knifes at a good price.

5 Stars for the price! First of all, you can't rate them compared to Cutco or other brands where one knife costs more than this entire set. That being said, these knives are unbelievable for the price and for that matter forget the price. They have great blades that are strong, rigid (not flimsy blades that could break) and incredibly sharp.
I have been using these knives daily for 4 months now. Used and washed the main chopping knife daily, yes daily. The blade is as sharp now as it was when I bought it. Some things to note, and again, for the price these do not warrant a bad star rating but if you are looking for perfection, you will want to know this (and probably shouldn't be buying a $30 set of knives). A previous review stated these knives fade. That the black fades. Yes, they do, but after the usage I have put them through the fading happens after the first couple washes and then stops. They are a faded "washed" looking black. They all fade just slightly differently but not enough to notice unless you are standing right in front of them. Another point is that the blades tend to get some markings on them. Not scratches but something that I think happens in the dishwasher like a stain. Not rust but almost like a water spot that doesn't go away. The steak knives are better than any other set I have ever bought except Cutco. Again, they are firm not flimsy and sharp as any other blade. The scissors are not cheap. They have stood up much better than the kind you buy separately at retailers. Oh, and lastly and probably what I like most about these blades. The "serrations" are not individual pointed edges that tend to "tear" your meat. They are rounded so they provide the same cutting power of a serrated bladed but giving a very clean edge. I even use them to slice sushi rolls and they do a very nice job without tearing or flatting the roll. Hope this helps. And I would buy another set in a heartbeat if I needed one, but I don't, these are just fine so far.

I bought this based on the Ginsu brand. I'm NOT AT ALL disappointed! Very sharp! The scissors included are also excellent. Looks very nice on my kitchen counter as well. Very elegant.

You get what you pay for. The knives are all serrated (meaning you cannot reasonably sharpen them). The blades are full-tang which is nice. The metal is not of the highest quality or thickness but it gets the job done.
This set makes for a decent utility knife set to complement a few more expensive quality knives. I recommend an expensive chef-knife be purchased along side if you are looking for any kind of complete kitchen.

I'm guilty of being a new cook but I still think that these are a great bargain. The chef knife makes me feel professional chopping through carrots, onions and chicken. I use the paring knife constantly for tomatoes and when I need more precision. I only wash them by hand and they are still rust free and sharp.

Love the sleek look of this product and the design of the blades that work so perfectly. The product was delivered on time and was received well-packaged. Only issue is though they were advertised as stainless stell blades, I have noticed slight rust-spotting a few short months after.

You get what you pay for. I've had mine a week now. They are beautiful on the counter with all my other black appliances and they are sharp (for now anyway). My issue is that I put one in the dishwasher and the handle was faded immediately. However, The others that I hand washed faded as well. I guess there is a smooth coating on the handles that washes away if scrubbed or soaked too long in water. So now I have dull looking handles that arent so pretty on the counter. Oh well. They are definitely better than what I had before.

Does anyone else recall those Ginsu commercials?? Well, I guess they have gone mainstream because they offer this little set of knives. They are quite sharp, have nice weight and look good to accent my other black utensils, etc. No complaints, particularly at this price point. Recommend purchasing these, if price is an object! If not, spend the extra for a named brand and take your chances there.

Great Beginner Knives,

This review is from: Ginsu 4814 14-Piece Bakelite Knife Set with Block, Black (Kitchen)
First off I have to say it's a good deal for what you are paying for. I bought this because I wanted a beginner's knife set to learn my way around the knives. The description of the knife set is not the same as what amazon.com said, but that I what I was hoping for. The knife set said there was a bread knife, but there actually was a Santoku knife. Its like the Japanese chef knife that is lighter and thinner. Its shaped strangely rounded down rather then up. I think its just their product design. My favorite knife is the Santoku knife because it was light and sharp and the boning knife because its' easy to use around large pieces of meat (just not as flexible as other models).
Pros -Block is a solid block ( it doesn't tip over when the knifes are inside) o It looks the same as the 04814 model on their website -Comes with a large verity of knife all of them were serrated except the Santoku knife o This means that the knife stays sharp for a while without being needed to be sharpen -Full tang o Knives that are solid that won't break as easily Cons -Blocks (looks a bit cheap, but you get what you pay for) -Serrated edge o Can't be sharpen, usually means that the knives are cheap o I tried to use shears to cut bones, but they bend somewhat pretty easily o The paring knife can't be used very well because of the serrated edge and the same goes with the utility knife, but all you really need is the chef knife and santoku (the rest is extra, but nice to have) I have only had it for 3 months and it seems to be fine. They say dish washer safe, but I always hand way and dry it so I can put it back in the block. So I take care of it and things seem to be fine, no rust or anything. |
