Product Description

Symmetrically-cut, dual serrated edges for precision slicing

Amazon.com

Many associate Ginsu knives with the product’s kitschy infomercial from the ‘70s that begins with a karate kick to a watermelon and proceeds with a demo of these knives cutting through just about anything in the house. Like the original product, Ginsu’s International Traditions is designed for the home cook who is not attuned to the maintenance required of a more high-end knife. However, this line is an improvement on the original, offering the weight, balance, and style of a commercial-quality knife, while meeting current design trends and performance expectations.

This 14-piece set stocks a kitchen with most cutlery needs, and packs the knives in a versatile storage block with multiple mounting options. The cutlery includes: an 8-inch chef’s knife, an 8-inch slicer, an 8-inch bread knife, a 5-inch boning knife, a 4-1/2-inch utility knife, a 3-1/2-inch paring knife, and six 4-1/2-inch steak knives, plus a pair of shears.

Ginsu blades are constructed from stainless steel and feature a two-dimensional serrated edge symmetrically cut on either side for more accurate slicing and for either right- or left-handed use. Edges are still as low-maintenance as ever and never require sharpening. The blades do not have full tangs but are instead encased in a strip of bakelite, which is sandwiched within a brushed stainless-steel handle. The steel handle provides some of the weight of the missing tang and a sleek, modern style.

The contemporary black hardwood storage block offers several mounting possibilities. Ideal for smaller kitchens, the block mounts upright to a wall or horizontally on the bottom of a cabinet. Slots are magnetized to ensure that knives don’t fall out. A swivel piece for under-cabinet mounting rotates the block to one side so handles are hidden until chefs turn handles face out to pull out a knife. The block also stands on a countertop, supported by two metal arms. Ginsu covers these International Traditions knives under a limited lifetime warranty, and recommends manual cleaning with hot, soapy water to keep them in top shape. --Cristina Vaamonde

After years of putting my enginnering skills to use on the domestic front perfecting handyman skills and owning every tool known to man

I have a few observations about our recent Ginsu/swivel block purchase I just installed.

I don't offer this as advice, but offer these ten potentially money-saving feedback notes:

1)Resist the tempation to send the whole thing back when you realize you

bought knives with no full tang construction. Some Ginsus have'em, some don't.

It is way too easy to read specs an reviews then conclude "they all have'em."

These don't. Significance? Have you ever had a "cheap knife" fail? Here's what

happens: the blade come loose straight up from the grip while you apply pressure

to a cut. The "tang" on those is a measly little protrusion of metal only glued or riveted (at best) into the handle which has rotted away. These knives were cheap, but now we will simply be aware that failure may be in the future. Which brings up the second consideration:

2)Don't be dismayed by the limited warranty. Is "wear and tear" covered by the warranty?

What is a "manufacturing defect" and who will decide such if "an accident has occured?

Anyway, you can return it and get a new one for $3. Yes, that seems like it is more

than the initial unit purchase price.

3)When mounting the "innovative" swivel block note that whatever you mount it to

can support a "15 pound permanent load". Otherwise, you may experience a scene similar

to the opening of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. How do you determine this load requirement?

Face of the block looked like it was cut with a hacksaw, by a blind person. Didn't even check the knives. Returned the same day!

It's not the miracle can cutting tomato slicing blade I was hoping for but it performs to realistic expectations. We use the undermount option to place these under our cabinet and have had them a long time now. I really like them and will probably buy them again as these ware out. Probably a 3-5 year purchase.

I Love the looks and the weight of these knives and the fact that you are able to install it under a cabinet. However when i try to use it to cut a tougher cut of meat or try to peel a vegetable i was very disappointed. The knives do not seem very sharp. Again VERY VERY disappointed!
