The Italian Vermeer,
By Claude Reich (Florianopolis, Brazil and Paris, France) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Giorgione: Myth and Enigma (Hardcover)
Very few paintings by Giorgione survive and very few aspects of his life are known to us. This book, the catalogue for an exhibition that was held in Vienna in 2004, successfully explores the career of this mysterious painter, master of light and colour. Very well documented on provenances and meanings, full of high-quality illustrations, it is a very valuable tool for anyone interested in Venetian painting.
The book is divided into several essays and studies the sources that inspired the artist (Jewish culture, astrological science...), his critical reception, some of his masterpieces (The Three Philosophers, The Tempest), the influence of the Northern School of painting (especially German, with Dürer who traveled to Venice in 1505-1507), the importance of everyday life and allegory in his art, etc. It also dwells on the origins of the Viennese collection of Giorgione's paintings, which is the richest in the world. Highly recommended for the quality of the text and illustrations. |
