Book Description

February 9, 2001 3 and upMasters of Art (Peter Bedrick Books)

Master painter, architect and sculptor, Giotto revolutionized the medieval art world. The late 13th and early 14th centuries was a time of magnificent architectural and artistic expression and Giotto played a pivotal role during this exciting era. Experimenting with new techniques in panel painting and fresco, his work became highly influential in his own day, as well as a source of inspiration to the artists of the Italian Renaissance. This book follows Giotto’s entire career, beginning with his training in Florence in the workshop of Cimabue, and introduces and illustrates the artists, works and creative techniques of 14th century Italy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giotto-The Man Who Changed Western Art, December 16, 2010

This review is from: Giotto and Medieval Art : The lives and works of the Medieval artists (Hardcover)
Before Giotto, Western European art followed Byzantine artistic conventions. Human figures were flat and faces showed very little emotion. Giotto re-introduced realism into European painting. The figures in his painting were complex and filled with human emotion. Giotto's innovations laid the groundwork for the artistic explosion that followed during the Renaissance. No study of the Medieval period can be complete without learning about this revolutionary artist.

"Giotto and Medieval Art" is part of the wonderful Masters of Art series. This is an Italian series of art history books that were translated into English in the early 1990's. The writing is informed and first rate. What really makes the series are the fantastic illustrations. The illustrator, Sergio Riccardi is very talented and his recreations of Medieval life will be certain to entertain child and parent alike. This is a great book that can be purchased used at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
