This review is from: Giovanni Bononcini: Luci Barbare - Cantate / Duetti / Sonate (Audio CD)
Bononcini is an obscure master of the late baroque. Everythng I have heard from this composer's poorly represented repertorie is beautiful yet richly complex. The airs are sweetly melodic and the instrumental pieces always fresh, complex, and impassioned. Yes, impassioned. This performance by the magnificent and also little known group Fons Musicae attains a rare synergy between the compositions' inherent pathos and the performers' skills. The early music style of this group must be heard to be believed! They are masters of phrasing and their acrid, original instrument sound sears you with the passion in the music - much like the style of Jordi Savall or Capriccio Stravagante. The countertenor's voice is delicate and not "hooty" and well matched with the excellent soprano. I found myself wearing out my repeat button , especially on the richly embellished slow movements.
