4.0 out of 5 stars At the top of their game..., July 27, 2006
This review is from: Gipsy Hill (Audio CD)
Big D steps up to the plate on their follow-up release to the classic Good Luck album. This EP is the Kid's Table at their finest. Everything is spot on: the lyrics, the melodies, the energy, the ska, the horns, the vocals, the guitars, the rhythms, just everything.

The album spikes off with a high-energy skank mosher that essentially carries the energy for the entire 35 minute romp. Checklist is the epitomizing Big D song in my opinion and ties with You Lost You're Crazy from the How It Goes album. The mosh favorites continue on with The Difference and a phenomenal cover of the Rudiments' Wailing Paddle. Of course The Kid's Table know the Ska too, as is apparent by The Scenester and Evil Girl/Angry Girl. The album ends with another fantastic cover: John Richman's New England. Nearly every song on the album is a gem.

Nearly...just nearly. This album would be perfect if not for a couple grievances. First of all, it's too short. A Big D album is typically an hour long with 15-16 songs. If it had as many songs as the Good Luck album it would be legendary. The other problem, is the filler. Two songs were completely pointless: What the Hell are You Gonna Do and the "cover" of Find Out. The latter more than the former because it is completely unbearable drunken banter that is both over my head in it's apparent hilarity and it also derails the album's momentum slightly.

Of course with fantastic hardcore songs like Those Kids Suck and a great instrumental Ska song in Great Song, it's hard to be completely pissed off. So if you like Big D, Punk and Third Wave Ska buy this and you will not be disappointed. However, this album is a bit rougher than their previous album so be warned all you First Wavers: this is NOT the Skatalites.

4 1/2 Stars (SO DAMN CLOSE)

This LP from the Boston ska group, Big D & The Kids Table, is pretty good. Some songs are calm, some of them are angry, but they all have a great energy, and it's too bad this band lately has been growing popular with the preppy trendy people. Evil Girl Angry Girl, and Those Kids Suck, are both great songs on this CD.
