5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous funky folk music from Turkey, March 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Gipsy Rum (Audio CD)
Did you ever wonder where groove was invented. This ensemble, led by noted Turkish multi-instrumentalist, Burhan Ocal is tight, inspired, fun and authentic to boot. Imagine yourself at a banquet for the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Imagine the House Band!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alcoholic rum is alright , I guess., October 6, 2003

This style of Turkish music is a perfect blend of Arabic and European traditions. The high-speed approach of belly-dance is replaced by melody, tempo-changes and clever instrumental inter-play.The tempo-changes are far too adventurous to dance to, unless you're really determined and expert. And it isn't drawn out over lengthy durations of time, like Turkish classical. It is tightly-packed rhythmic, melodic music.Texture is the calling card of Ocal cd's.You can hear the timbre of each instrument so clearly.A really entrancing thing to hear. And they swirl around each other beautifully(oud, violin, percussion, clarinet etc...).There is nothing regulation about the performances of this ottoman/arabic music.Accurately and passionately played.Creatively arranged.Production is as good as it gets. This is the most charming Arabian/Middle Eastern cd I've come across.
You can't sell this grade of rum at the bar.

This is the first cd that I listened to by Burhan Ocal..I had heard him before..This cd can be called as best of turkish and gypsy music..Here the musicians are very talented..and Burhan Ocal...He is the worldwide famous percussionist, generally a very good musician..I also strongly recommend you to find his "Black Sea" album with guitarist Enver Izmailov...This cd is absolutely wonderful..

5.0 out of 5 stars exceptional music, December 19, 2005

This review is from: Gipsy Rum (Audio CD)
The quality of this music is first rate, the coordination between instruments in some of the ensemble pieces mesmerizing. From a chorus of violins the kanun jumps in fiery solos. The taksims and individual showcasing of violin, oud, kanun and clarinet are also of exceptional quality, easily surpassing recrodings of some of the more famous turkish solo artists.
