Book Description

April 1, 2006 Hesperus Modern Voices
Living in a small dwelling at the bottom of the lane, the Wyatts never had cause to associate with the family in the big house—until their cat is attacked by the family's dog. This precipitates an unlikely friendship between the two sets of children; yet the vast gulf between the families is too much for even the youngest to bridge, and the budding relationships end in frustration and ultimately tragedy. "The Gipsy's Baby" is the first in this series of stories in which Rosamond Lehmann explores life in rural England with all its joys, struggles, and heartbreaks. Rosamond Lehmann (1901–1990) is perhaps best known for her novel, The Echoing Grove. She and her husband, artist Wogan Philipps, were at the heart of Bloomsbury society.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection, June 11, 2004
By A Customer
This is a really wonderfull collection of stories covering Britain durring the world wars. The stories are about women and their weight in the world but this isn't heavy reading and learning lessons. The language is beautiful, mostly about bittersweet times and how we get through. There are five stories. The first, the title story is about a poor family who losses it's lynchpin told through the eyes of a young girl from a rich family. The second The Red-Haired Miss Daintreys it like a sadder more realistic but still beautiful mini version of The Pursuit of Love. The next two, When the Waters Came and A Dream of Winter are both more scenes than stories. The longest and last story Wonderful Holidays is about a divorced woman caring for two children durring the war. These are just brief descriptions. There is so much more to this book. I can't recommend it enough!
