Book Description

May 1, 1998 Virago Modern Classics
In these captivating short stories, we find perfect miniatures of Rosamond Lehmann's fictional world. The themes that permeate her novels are echoed here—delicate portrayals of the world of adults as seen through the eyes of childhood, and fascination with other families—their otherness and the romance of their separate worlds. These beautifully crafted stories wonderfully demonstrate the genius of Rosamond Lehmann.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection, June 11, 2004

This review is from: The Gipsy's Baby (Virago Modern Classics) (Paperback)
This is a really wonderfull collection of stories covering Britain durring the world wars. The stories are about women and their weight in the world but this isn't heavy reading and learning lessons. The language is beautiful, mostly about bittersweet times and how we get through. There are five stories. The first, the title story is about a poor family who losses it's lynchpin told through the eyes of a young girl from a rich family. The second The Red-Haired Miss Daintreys it like a sadder more realistic but still beautiful mini version of The Pursuit of Love. The next two, When the Waters Came and A Dream of Winter are both more scenes than stories. The longest and last story Wonderful Holidays is about a divorced woman caring for two children durring the war. These are just brief descriptions. There is so much more to this book. I can't recommend it enough!
