Taken from Chapter 6: Lots of Spots A giraffe's body is covered by a layer of fur that is almost an inch (2. 5 cm) thick. Scientists believe the thick coat protects the giraffe from the hot sun. Young giraffes often have spots that are lighter in color than those of adults. The spots darken as the giraffes get older. No two giraffes have identical spots on their coat. Giraffes from the same area of Africa, however, have similar spot patterns. The patterns may act as camouflage by helping giraffes hide from predators. The spots blend in with trees and make giraffes hard to see when they are standing still. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I bought this book for my 4-year-old son. It is a very nice book. It has lots of great information and facts about giraffes and nice color photos. It's a little long and advanced for a 4-year-old, so I will put it away for a a year or so until he's ready.
