Book Description

Text and photographs depict the construction of a skyscraper, from the digging of the foundation through erection of the steel structure to the topping off, when the building's highest part is placed.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4-- Balterman has assembled a personal photo essay that traces the construction of a skyscraper in downtown Chicago. Starting with the demolition of an old parking garage, readers follow the project to completion after more than three years of labor. This is not a book that labels every piece of equipment and it won't be of much use to report writers; vocabulary is defined only in context and without pronunciation guidance. Instead, Balterman emphasizes the great team effort a project of this magnitude requires and, through interesting camera angles and sharp full-color photography, captures the immensity of the building. Indeed, intrigued readers may find that more questions are raised than are answered. They can then be directed to Tim Ostler's Skyscrapers (Gloucester, 1988) for more technical information in a much less interesting format. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, TX
