1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK
This book is completely ridiculous and although maybe it could do a very tiny bit to help someone break a habit if all they needed was a poorly reasoned pep talk, there is no way it will ever help someone who genuinely has a problem with a bad habit they can't seem to break. Most of the "advice" in the book is just an amazingly large collection of figures of speech...

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK, January 26, 2009
This review is from: The Girl Who Bites Her Nails and the Man Who Is Always Late: What Our Habits Reveal About Us (Paperback)
This book is completely ridiculous and although maybe it could do a very tiny bit to help someone break a habit if all they needed was a poorly reasoned pep talk, there is no way it will ever help someone who genuinely has a problem with a bad habit they can't seem to break. Most of the "advice" in the book is just an amazingly large collection of figures of speech relating to some aspect of a particular habit (ie- "spitting nails," "have our claws out," "claw their way to the top," "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours," etc for nail biting). There is no real support given for any of the claims in the book. But that's not all. If that were it, the book would be harmless and I would probably rate it with two or three stars. The problem is this book is not harmless at all. The part I find most alarming is that the author claims that allergies are not real and are just a cry for attention and an attempt to be controlling. I don't care how much you try not to be controlling and to seek attention only in healthy ways, if you genuinely have an allergy, you will have that allergy all your life, and trying to pretend it doesn't exist could be life-threatening. That is why I am taking the time to write this review. Do not buy this book. This is a horrible book and following some of the advice in it could actually be hazardous to your health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and well written, April 15, 2007
This review is from: The Girl Who Bites Her Nails and the Man Who Is Always Late: What Our Habits Reveal About Us (Paperback)
This was the first book I have read that explained the forming of habits. I found it insightful and well written. I thoroughly enjoyed the case histories. This book is going to set a lot of people free and help them to become whole. Ann Gadd has done a great task in recording and discussing habits and their debilitating power. She must be a remarkable soul to be so insightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A helpful and entertaining read, September 3, 2010
This review is from: The Girl Who Bites Her Nails and the Man Who Is Always Late: What Our Habits Reveal About Us (Paperback)
This is an enormously large and complex topic and I thought Ann covered a number of the more well known habits well, giving a good insight into their causes and reasons. For someone troubled by their own habits or someone close to them, this is a good thought provoking read. I found it entertaining and practical.
