4.0 out of 5 stars Set sail for fun, April 28, 2011

This review is from: The Girl on the Boat (Hardcover)
Take one feisty redhead, one suitor, one former suitor, and one would-be suitor. Add one trans-Atlantic crossing, one English country house, and assorted mishaps and misunderstandings. Season with plenty of Wodehouse's trademark wit. Place in an Overlook Press collector's edition. Peruse at your leisure.

First published in 1922 as Three Men and a Maid, this relatively early work isn't as fully developed as some of the author's later masterpieces.

As one would expect from a Wodehouse story, there is a cast of eccentric characters. There's also some rather clever wordplay. Wodehouse peppers the narrative with several asides to his readers. The tone is effervescent, tempered with a gentle tongue-in-cheek mockery of both the upper class and the foolishness of young lovers.

Overall, The Girl on the Boat is certainly worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another pleasant romp, October 3, 2008

This review is from: The Girl on the Boat (Hardcover)
Another pleasant romp from Wodehouse. The protaganists are, by design, on the shallow and lightweight side. I'm sure Wodehouse had his reasons for this approach, but it causes me to rank this story behind some of Wodehouse's other books (Leave it to Psmith, Hot Water, Bill the Conqueror). On the other hand, I particularly liked the authorial side comments in this one.
