Book Description

March 1, 2003 Haslar Saga 1
Born at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, Mary and Walter Tilford's baby daughter is named Thursday. It was meant to be a message of hope for the future, but they could not foresee that by the time Thursday celebrated her 21st birthday, Britain would once again be at war with Germany. Thursday is determined to help in the war effort and volunteers as a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse. The realities of war are brought home to her when the casualties begin to arrive from Dunkirk, and Thursday begins to understand the true meaning of courage. While experiencing all the natural hopes and dreams of any young woman, finding pleasure and joy as well as sorrow in her work, Thursday is given her own opportunity to show strength and bravery in the face of war—and find a lasting love.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Following the great success of Donna's signings last summer for A Girl Called Thursday in hardback, has been causing a stir yet again in Portsmouth, signing copies of her new paperback A Girl Called Thursday and most recent hardback Tuppence to Spend. At the small Gosport bookshop they sold around 70 copies in total, and at Ottakar's Portsmouth they completely sold out of the 40 orso copies they had in stock. Lilian signed a stack of bookplates for furtherorders. She also signed at successful events at Ottakar's, Fareham and at her

More About the Author

Hi,I am Lilian Harry and am delighted to welcome you to my Author Central page. I've been writing for a long time now, under the name Donna Baker as well as Lilian Harry, and most of my books are classed as 'historical novels', including those set during the Second World War (which is slightly hurtful, since I remember it....) I grew up near Portsmouth in Hampshire, have lived in Devon, Herefordshire and the Lake District (my favourite place!) and am now back in Devon on the edge of Dartmoor, where I am out every day walking my miniature schnauzer. Apart from writing, I ring bells, take part in amateur dramatics, go to concerts, theatre etc, read and play bridge - but only with very tolerant, forgiving people who like me a lot. (Or on the computer!) I would like to be cloned so that I can do all these things simultaneously.

I discoved Lilian Harry last summer, since that time I have read most of earlier works and I can say that her lastest release "Girl called Thursday" lives up to the author's great standards. Ms. Harry takes the reader back to Portsmounth during the beginning of world war 2 and the tell the story of a young girl named Thursday, who has joined the VADs. As with her other books Ms. Harry give the reader many details of both the setting and characters. Another great book by Lilian Harry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful nursing info and general life novel in WW2 era, May 24, 2011
This review is from: A Girl Called Thursday (Haslar Saga 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a very good book. I have never read any UK printed fiction historicals before. Some of the lingo in it is very different than in America but I figured out pretty quick. It follows the life of a girl named Tuesday. She was born in 1918 on a thursday during some important historical event-I forgot what it was-so her parents named her this.

This starts out how she was to be a seamstress but decides she wants to join the mobile VADs-nursing assistants-she gets sent to a place not far from home. This story follows along when the Germans started bombing London and surounding areas. This is definately an eye opener for those of you who are in your 30s who never got this war covered in school. I only remember the conservation camps nothing else so if you want to learn alittle history AND read about real people and how they learn to love even if it means their man goes off to fight the war-this is the book for you. Any of these type of books well good reading about common folk. Its a nice change from reading about rich people. I am more interested in common life than the glitter and stardom that others seek to read about.
