Not only is it awesome that these are written and illustrated by women but they also have spotlights of influential women in Marvel (past and present). I bought this for my daughter but as soon as it arrived I sat down and read it all myself, but I'm not an avid comic reader myself so I can't speak much in that regard. I think this is a great thing for girls to see that if they want to do something, even in male dominated fields, they can be successful. Plus there's plenty of good storylines to boot.

Format: Paperback
First, I'm a guy. I love women, but I ain't one. Second, I'm a longtime Marvel fan, dating back to the days when comics cost only 10 cents. Third, I love creativity, including when a comic book series takes a new approach to familiar characters.

Girl Comics isn't just about women superheroes; it is entirely written and drawn by a wide array of women creators and the female sensibility is very refreshing. These are short stories, each by a different creative team, but there are more hits than misses (no pun intended). The Punisher goes after a child molester who lures a 14-year-old girl to a carnival, Dr. Octopus goes grocery shopping, Franklin and Valeria Richards are trapped in fairyland nightmare complete with a wicked witch. Scott Summers worries about Jean Gray's attraction to Wolverine. The Inhumans go to great lengths to give Lockjaw a bath. Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm pull a prank phone call on Doctor Doom. Mary Jane Watson daydreams about dating other superheroes. Jubilee and Logan have a heart to heart talk about their relationship.

I really enjoyed this collection as a whole and hope you will give it a try.

I thought this was a really fun collection. It had a good mix of stories - some funny, some darker. A lot of the comics made me laugh out loud. There was also some really terrific art. It was neat that they included profiles of women who were important in the earlier years of marvel.
