3.0 out of 5 stars A relationship triangle in the squared circle January 19, 2012
Format:DVD
ALPHA VIDEO is the dba of a Pennsylvania-based outfit called GOTHAM. They specialize in niche market material, mostly vintage programmers and public domain stuff. Quality of their unrestored movie transfers varies from fair to good, based on condition of film stock and source material (often old 16mm broadcast prints). The only extras provided are a catalog insert and DVD-accessible title list.

.
'B' grade musical programmer THE GIRL FROM MONTEREY is the story of a Mexican nightclub singer (Lita) who finds herself torn between brother (Baby) and lover (Jerry). Lita hopes to get a scheduled middleweight boxing match between the two men cancelled. The manager of her brother's opponent tries to distract Baby from training by hiring a girl to seduce him. Film's highlights are the realistic ring scenes.

CAST AND CREW TRIVIA--

Wallace Fox is best known for the several East Side Kids comedies he directed for MONOGRAM in the early 1940s.

Comedian Edgar Kennedy claimed he once battled Jack Dempsey for 14 rounds. He co-stars here as fight promoter Doc Hogan.

Anthony Caruso (Baby) had an extensive TV career-- Star Trek fans will remember him as gangster Bella Oxmyx in the season 2 episode, "A Piece of the Action."

Boxer Tito Flores is Jay Silverheels, who later portrayed Tonto opposite Clayton Moore's Lone Ranger.

Armida's 'B' film career ended with 1951's RHYTHM INN, and her appearance as a specialty dancer.

Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 IMDb viewer poll rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Rocky Prototype July 28, 2006
By jen
Format:DVD
This film is in the rocky tradition of showing a small time boxer get his shot at the big time, despite long odds and teh corruption of the boxing world in general. This time around a young boxer's sister gets worried about him and tries to learn more aobut his life. There are some great boxing scenes in the film and you can see that stalone got some of his ideas for rocky from it. Overall a very fun movie to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a willing buyer May 2, 2006
Format:DVD
''Only `Raging Bull' comes close to the realism and emotional undercurrents of `The Girl from Monterey'. This amazing old movie just proves that one CAN combine convincing ring action with intelligent acting. If A2ZCDS has anything else like this to offer, I'm a willing buyer''
