5.0 out of 5 stars Field of Schemes, June 17, 2009
This review is from: Girl Genius Volume 6: Agatha Heterodyne And The Golden Trilobite (v. 6) (Paperback)
Agatha Heterodyne is the last, lost heir to the heroic Heterodyne Boys ... themselves heirs to a family of particularly powerful and cruel mad scientists (Sparks). She is also the heir to another Spark family: Lucifer Mongfish and his daughter Lucrezia. Agatha's journey to her legendary, feared ancestral home has been sidetracked, for she is now trapped between the ruling Spark of Europe (Klaus Wolfenbach), the revived spirit of Lucrezia, the pale amazons who worship Lucrezia, and various others whose loyalties are uncertain--but certainly do not include Agatha.

Agatha's friends are not idle. Master Payne's Circus of Adventure sets off to rescue her, aided by three monsters loyal to the House of Heterodyne. They are joined by a pair of plumbers. And, of course, Agatha plots to rescue herself. When plans collide, nothing goes as planned ... and the result could be disaster for Agatha, Klaus and all of Europe as plot threads are loosed upon the landscape. But for Agatha, rescue is at hand with a pie in the face and a fog that leads into a world of dreams.

This is perhaps not the place to join the story. If you don't want to begin at the beginning, then I would recommend starting with Volume 4, Agatha Heterodyne and the Circus of Dreams. But do please join it. The story mixes page-by-page episodes with longer arcs that cross volumes and that apparently will span the whole series. The authors' description, "Adventure, Romance, Mad Science" is well borne out, the series is filled with humor, the characters can be counted on to each bring something to the party, and the artwork is superb. (The first volume, in black and white, was an appetizer. Volumes two and three had one color artist, volume four another, and a truly superb artist joined the Foglio's for volumes five and on.) Look for "Easter Eggs" in the backgrounds and in the dialog. In an earlier volume there is a reference to a very famous artist; in a later volume Agatha's talking cat makes a reference to Doestoyevski.

The Girl Genius series is a five-star treat.

There have been complaints of poor quality printing and binding. The Foglio's have recently announced reprints to be issued by a different and presumably better printer/binder.

The Girl Genius webcomic from which these books are derived was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story of 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful edition worthy of the art it holds, May 9, 2008

This edition of Girl Genius is an exquisitely well-crafted book. Includes comics from Monday, March 13, 2006 to Friday, February 23, 2007[..] with Agatha in Sturmhalten. It's bound in a kind of plush hardcover that is sturdy and comfortable to read with beautiful cover art. Colors are crisp and vibrant. Several extra drawings are included as well as "An Agatha Heterodyne 1 Minute Mystery." I would love to get the rest of the Girl Genius hardcover books (1-5) but they seem to sell out and become unavailable rather quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars just keep getting better, March 30, 2008

I think that this is the best comic series running today. They just keep getting better and better. Very funny, very original, and very suspenseful. Fundamentally a steampunk fantasy, clearly anime/manga influenced, but very American in its sly sense of humor. Never predictable, the plot is involved and surprisingly sophisticated. And the art is lovely, if unapologetically cartoonish. I can't wait for the books; I'm reading each page as it comes out on the Girl Genius web site--but I still have a pre-order in for the next volume.
