I know this book is suppose to be great! The history part is putting me to sleep. I thought about skipping that part, but may get confused later. So I laid the book down for awhile. Sorry!

4.0 out of 5 stars Decide to do it, then do it!, June 23, 2004
A holistic and straightforward approach to managing your money, Girl, Get Your Money Straight!, is written in plain English and simple enough for even beginners to comprehend. There are no complicated terms or intimidating jargon, which require a financial planner to interpret, thus easing the reader's way to fall in step towards change. Making amendments to your financial future starts with seven simple, precise steps, you can take now. As stressed in this book, there are no preliminary steps other than to determine in your mind that you want to make a change. Specifically written in a vernacular that would appeal to the African-American woman, Glinda Bridgforth gets down to the nitty gritty when talking about finances. Not a subject easily broached in the Black community it would seem, finance is something that we must get under control in order to prosper. From years of counseling people, Girl, Get You Money Straight contains many scenarios in which readers can relate. Though written several years ago, the information is still pertinent and viable. The scenarios examine the root cause of the behavior and works on changing the root to yield a more prosperous bloom. One example would be the misguided concept of "keeping up with the Jones'" and what a tremendous financial burden that creates on the family when appearances overshadow necessity.
Written several years ago, the information in this book is still pertinent and viable. If you have decided to change your financial life, this book is necessary to help you along your journey. With strength from above and a purposeful goal in mind, you can overcome the bonds of financial dependence and free yourself by starting now.

I have read many financial books on how to manage money but Ms. Bridgsforth does a superb job in 'Girl Get your money straight' on how to truly get your finances together. The steps that she provides in this book are clear, comprehensive, and concise and can easily be applied into your personal life with success over a period of time. These holistic ideas and concepts along with her own testimonial and those of several clients (who are mentioned in the text along with her) who have applied these elements and have been debt free are truly inspirational and this book has been so helpful in my quest to get my money straight. This is one book that I would recommend to all especially young and old sisters who are looking to get their money straight. Thank you Ms. Bridgsforth for bringing this book to the community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money Made Simple, January 24, 2003

i love the approach that bridgforth takes here. this is the best book about money that i've ever read. i've been attempting to "straighten" my money for a long time by buying books to educate myself. this is, however, the only book that does not lose me in the middle. it addresses issues that other 'money' books dont address like bad credit, not being able to get a bank account, and the like. all of these issues dont apply to all african american women, but i appreciated that she did take the time to take it into consideration. it shapes the reader's mind in such a way that she truly believes that getting her financial situation together is not impossible. i have recommended this book to all of my girlfriends. even if you have a hard time reading books that arent novels, i can assure that you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Do You Want to Get Rid of Your Debts?, February 15, 2002
This review is from: Girl, Get Your Money Straight!: A Sister's Guide to Healing Your Bank Account and Funding Your Dreams in 7 Simple Steps (Hardcover)
When you change "budgeting" to "Spending Plan," as Glinda B does you convert your feeling deprived, ashamed and frightened into feeling good about being prosperous.
As I read this book, and diligently did each exercise, I didn't want this book to end. This book has guided me on a journey that I had previously longed to be on, yet feared getting started.
In the week that I read this book, I have uncovered so many beliefs, feelings and attitudes about my family history with money. I also became more understanding of them. I also discovered that many of their self-destructive money habits were also my habits. Our actions were different, but our money beliefs were the same. And at first this shocked me.
This empowered me to feel better about my history, and to forgive everybody. It lifted a load off my shoulders. I realized that this was not about not having money, but really about my fears, my shame, and my not allowing myself to be responsible for what I could do to solve my problems.
Every scenario in this book guides you face what has been getting in your way, and to turn those "obstacles," into what compels you to create a vision of yourself with financial peace of mind.
This book is about using your past to create a compelling life for yourself, one where you have options, joy, balance and authenticity.
The results of having read this book is a huge improvement in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, something that works, February 28, 2001

This review is from: Girl, Get Your Money Straight!: A Sister's Guide to Healing Your Bank Account and Funding Your Dreams in 7 Simple Steps (Hardcover)
At last, someone who understands me. For the longest I couldn't understand why I kept spending and spending when I knew good and well I didn't have the money to "shop until I dropped".

Glinda explains the root causes of why many sisters spend, spend spend. I never realized my issues with money stem from how I saw my mother and other family members handle money. I also never tied the connection between my emotions and my shopping habits.

This book is not just another "finance" book - but it speaks directly to your heart. When I read the book I saw myself and felt like someone actually knew what I was going through.

Glinda tells the stories of many women, including herself, who were in overwelming amounts of debt and have now become debt free while applying her principles. Nothing is more uplifting and inspiring than to see someone else in the same situation, or even worse, completely change their life around.

Once you discover the root cause of your spending you can attack it head on and start living a stress free and debt free life. As sisters, we add so much drama to our life when we really don't need to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tips, October 19, 2006
This book offered great advise on how women can take control over their spending. I have had such a hard time learning how to budget my money. But this book gives a spending plan that is truly fool-proof. I created this plan in Excel based on the book & I carry it EVERYWHERE. It has brought a new-found awareness to my spending habits & made me extremly conscious of what I spend.
