5.0 out of 5 stars Contains Nearly All the Girl Group Great Hits, June 4, 2002
This review is from: Girl Group Greats (Audio CD)
This CD is definitely worth five stars. I guess no CD can have all the songs you would like, but if this CD had The Crystals singing Da Do Ron Ron and Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes singing Be My Baby, this would be the complete ultimate CD for the girl groups of the 1960's. Nevertheless, if you enjoy music of the girl groups of the 1960's, this CD belongs in your collection. I find this one and Leader of the Pack to be the best CD's of the girl groups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember when music used to be FUN?, September 13, 2005

This review is from: Girl Group Greats (Audio CD)
I was born in 1978, so now I'm 26 years old and just until a couple years ago, I never really cared to listen to a whole lot of the 40's and 50's or even 60's stuff. But then I got open-minded (which everyone SHOULD be) and actually let myself really listen to a lot of the older stuff. I have always loved It's My Party from that movie Problem Child but until recently, I didn't care for a CD with it. All my friends just only listened to the "cool and fresh" stuff and didn't ever dare listen to anything a couple or a few decades ago. But then I asked myself this question: Why am I listening to music that all my friends and aquaintances like and not what I want to listen to? So I bought a bunch of CD's including this Girl Group Greats CD and I just love it!!

I feel so much better listening to Chapel Of Love (my all time favorite!) than I do listening to 99% of today's crap called "music!" I'm sorry but Eminem is NOT music!!! Music is supposed to be fun to dance and sing along to, to just relax to, NOT have a whole song full of swearing and explicit language!! Music is supposed to be beautiful, NOT a bunch of noise! It is a shame that you can't hear a song like Chapel Of Love, It's My Party, My Boyfriend's Back, At The Hop (which isn't on this CD but it's a favorite of mine also), and Please Mr. Postman in this day and age! Songs like these didn't have swearing, it was just cool to dance and sing along to!

I'm not saying I don't listen to anything from this decade, but I'm very selective. You will NEVER see an Eminem CD in my collection! The 50's and 60's music had a special magic that today's music just doesn't have, it's really sad!

I might be one of very few that actually listens to this music who are in my age range but I don't care. I will pick this, REAL music, over that noise they call music of today anyday!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sweet And Tough Sounds Of Girl Groups, October 16, 2010
This review is from: Girl Group Greats (Audio CD)
Effervescent, powerful, fun and even tragic. There are A-1 songs galore. There's the buy-now-maybe-pay-later of the Shirelles "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", the joy plus determination of the Chiffons "He's So Fine", the anxiousness of the Marvelettes "Please Mr. Postman" and the dark end of romance with the Shangri-La's' "Leader of the Pack". Then how about the one hit wonders of the Jaynettes "Sally Go 'Round the Roses" and the Exciters "Tell Him"? AM radio was so glorious back then. Another thing to relish is the production work. You might not just say what fine singers and songs but what innovative production. Heading all this is the dramatic suspense of George Shadow Morton's "Leader of the Pack" and Luther Dixon's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow".

This offers a mixture of the sweetest and toughest sounds of rock and roll's most underrated period and actually presents a better overview than the once definitive "The Best of the Girl Groups, Vol.1". Motown gets included this time. Yeah!

5.0 out of 5 stars talk about talent !!!, May 29, 2009

Girl Group Greats has so many excellent songs that practically any fan of this type of music will want it for their collection. These girl groups had worlds of talent; and it always showed whenever they performed. There's not a dud in the bunch here! The quality of the sound is excellent and I like the artwork.

Martha & The Vandellas kick things off with their big hit entitled "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave;" this lacks nothing--it's all THAT good. Their excellent diction bolsters their performance and I love it. Leslie Gore turns in a terrific number when she sings "It's My Party;" I always liked this tune and Leslie delivers this faultlessly. I could never tire of hearing Leslie sing this one; even though the lyrics aren't so happy the tune is such a masterpiece that it's a powerful, memorable experience every time.

The Shangri-Las sing "Leader Of The Pack" with panache; the sound effects are great and they harmonize to perfection! ""Leader Of The Pack" is a major highlight of this album; I think you'll like it if you haven't heard this one already. In addition, The Marvelettes turn out "Please Mr. Postman" without ever faltering--this is yet another tune I always like to hear. Little Peggy March sings "I Will Follow Him" with a great deal of genuine emotion; and I think her obvious emotion is the reason why this ballad ranked so high in many people's books.

The Exciters perform "Tell Him" with all their hearts and soul; the percussion works wonders for this early rock and roll number and it all holds its own very well. Then there's a huge favorite of mine, "Chapel Of Love" by The Dixie Cups. The Dixie Cups never let their fans down; and just one listen to their songs--including this one here--proves it. "Chapel Of Love" is charming in every way--this is all THAT good. The Cookies sing "Don't Say Nothin' Bad (About My Baby)" with terrific percussion and music that enhances the number all the more; it's another major highlight of this CD.

The Essex does "Easier Said Than Done" really well; the background male vocals work well and "Easier Said Than Done" is a strong tune in every way. "My Boyfriend's Back" is pretty catchy; and listen for "(The) Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" by Betty Everett. "(The) Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" is wonderful; and The Supremes do not disappoint as they deliver "Where Did Our Love Go" without ever letting go of a single superfluous note! "The Boy From New York City" has a great sound--nice guitar work, too. The Shirelles turn out "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" with their usual finesse; and that's quite all right by me! The Toys sing "A Lover's Concerto" with a lot of heart and soul; and the CD ends very nicely with Claudine Clark doing "Party Lights."

Girl Group Greats is one fine CD that will not disappoint people who want high quality control music that offers up some the best tunes ever done by these artists. People just discovering the magical artistry of the girl groups would do well to get this album, too.

I love this CD! So many fun girl group songs! I wish it had the Crystal's "He's a Rebel" and the Ronette's "Be My Baby". Still, it's an awesome album!

The only way to describe this collection of Girl Group Greats is to say that "I truely melt with the beautiful voices and the love messages that each song was meant to exhibit; it brings out the hidden inner love that I didn't know existed within me".
I know these hidden feelings are in each one of us, and this is the way to test it out. Exquisite!

This review is from: Girl Group Greats (Audio CD)
Took this CD to a party and it was played over and over again. Lots of comments " I remember that one ! " ..... or " that was my favorite song ". Once Leslie Gore started singing "It's my Party...." the dancing was in full swing. Great party CD.
